Kind of odd to do that
… to someone who hasn’t played in MLB in more than three years, and clearly isn’t coming back. What’s the point of announcing this now?

MLB is correct.
Not the post about it — just thought it was weird for MLB to announce a suspension for someone who’s clearly retired.

He played last year - how is he clearly retired?
He’s a player in the minors, but they announce all of those as well, it’s definitely not a weird thing to announce.
He was playing in AA, he's essentially retired,
or comparable to Pedro Cerrano in Major League: Back to the Minors.
"You've got to get your damn shirts rolled up and go out and kick somebody's ass. That's what you've got to do. Period." -- Lou Piniella
He's 36, but playing in the minors. They report ALL suspensions from testing positive.
This is still a non story. “essentially retired” is not the same as retired.
and he is still getting paid to play baseball

This is a joke. Hey, while we're at it, let's start investigating players from the 60s and 70s.
I knew Dennis Menke’s eyes looked funny!

NOT DWARYLE!!!!

So pretty much end of career
Why would a team call him up from the minors only to go right to suspension??
I still like Daryle

And Leo's getting larger!

I'm sure this ban extends to any rec league softball games that Ward was going to play in next summer

Is he still allowed to hit sausages from the dugout?

Sorry, got my big midseason acquisitions mixed up
Where’s the delete post button on here, anyways?

Technical balk.
Batter, take your base.

Should the Cubs have to forfeit their '07 & '08 Central Division crowns now?
They’re surely tainted now.

I don't think he deserves to be labeled a terrible acquisition
He had some big hits in his time with the Cubs

Agreed.
He was probably the best bench player/pinch hitter in baseball in 2007. Ward put up a .400 wOBA in 133 PAs. That’s monstrous — and, interestingly, he hit only three HRs that season.

I liked Dwarle.
I particularly remember a game in Florida he won with a pinch hit home run.
But I didn’t realize he was still playing baseball…
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
This just reinforces
that the true PED issue isn’t in superstars setting records, but in has-beens trying to keep earning and keeping minor leagues (who are more severely tested) from rising.
There are a lot of AAA players who could have done what Ward has done the last few years. How many of them have gotten traded or cut or bounced out of baseball because guys like Ward haven’t moved on?
I’d rather feel sorry for those guys than Hank Aaron or Roger Maris.
"It's all in the game, yo"
