Yes, but it doesn't matter
Big Macs don’t have real meat anyways.

The Angels (and Tigers now) will look like dogs crapping razor blades
These contracts are insanity.
I enjoy this website because it's so interesting to see folks pole vaulting over mouse turds.
not to mention possibly adding $10M for milestones
GAWD these contracts just continue to get out of control

if he brings them some rings....
it won’t seem quite as bad.

I know what you're saying...
but even if the Angels win the WS the next 4 years, that contract is going to be such an albatross at the end of it.
Holy Backloaded Contract, Batman
$51 million for the first three years of the contract and $59 million for the last two years of the contract (for his age 40 and 41 seasons). That’s insane. The Angels should have inverted this contract and paid him the large annual salaries in the early years and then declining salaries in the later years of the contract. There is a much better chance of Pujols putting up the numbers to earn a $30 million salary in 2012 when he is 32 than there is in 2021 when he’s 41.
In ten years
30 million might not even be one of the top 10 annual salaries. Hell it might not be in the top 25!
Marilyn Monroe "yogi your a pretty cool guy"
Berra " Marilyn you ain't so hot yourself"!
Don't forget
that the $28, $29, and $30 million in the last 3 years will really be worth about 5-15% less because of inflation anyway. Paying him $30 million in 2012 dollars will only get him ~$27 million worth of good and services in 2022. If he’s lucky! LOL

Don't care...
…he’s gone from the NL Central…along with Fielder…that’s all that matters now. Only 1B in the division who’ll kill the Cubs now is Votto…so, we got that goin’ for us.

Well, there's that Braun guy.
After his suspension, of course.

Don't think Braun is being switched to 1st base

You know, I misread the first-base part.
I thought Ed was just talking big bats in the division. My bad.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
yeah, let's not talk about all the big bats that have left the division
Dunn was the first stake in the heart, back in 2008, but at least he stayed in the NL. But with ARam, Soriano, and DLee’s long ball productivity declining dramatically these last few years, and add to that Pujols and Prince not only leaving the division but the league as well… we’re pretty much left with Ryan Braun, Joey Votto and the ghost of Carlos Lee.
ballhawks are going to turn into ballpigeons…

But, yeah, I feel your pain.

well, here on BCB we kept talking about Rami moving to 1B
why not move him in MIlwaukee? That might work well for them and he could kill us
Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?
A: To Dump Garza
Disagree
LaHair could kill us too.

If the Angels or the Tigers
don’t win it all within the first 3 years of these contracts, the fan base will be on the warpath worse than we were with Soriano.
"IN THEO WE TRUST"
I think that's incredibly extreme.
What if the Tigers/Angels consistently make the playoffs and fall short despite consistent production from Fielder/Pujols?
The fans would certainly be disappointed, but not on the warpath, as BigJohn asserts. The difference is that the Cubs only got two playoff appearances (being swept each time) before Soriano seemed to age about 10 years in 2009. Even then, if the Cubs had somehow made the playoffs that year (and they were in first place in early August) and not been really bad for the past two years, we wouldn’t have gotten on any warpaths regardless of whether Soriano is still worth his contract.
Soriano’s contract is viewed as a primary reason why the Cubs are and have been bad, because said enormous contract relative to results since 2009 prohibits other moves that could strengthen the team. The team has had three consecutive disappointing seasons (two of which were awful). If Fielder/Pujols can avoid being seen as primary reasons for bad Tigers/Angels teams, there will be no warpath — regardless of whether a World Series comes to Orange County or Detroit.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
You make a valid point, BUT
… regardless of whether the teams can still afford other moves, these moves are PERCEIVED as win-now moves by the fanbases.
If they don’t win it all at least once in the early years, it could get quite ugly in Anaheim & Detroit.

As long as they don't get bad pretty quick ...
and Fielder and Pujols aren’t seen as primary reasons why, the ire will not be at all similar to what Cubs fans have regarding the Soriano signing.

how strong is the angels fanbase?

A bunch of lame posers
I’ve been living in LA for about a year now and they’re all the Dodger rejects; a la whitesox fans.

Um, that's not true at all.
Look at their attendance numbers over the last several seasons. Perhaps not so much in LA, but the Angels have throngs of loyal fans in Orange County; you know, where they actually play their games.
"I always tell the truth -- Even when I lie" -- Tony Montana
right
I live about 30 minutes from Angel stadium and 40 from Dodger stadium. The drive to Dodger stadium takes years off your life it sucks so bad.
Only reason I would go to a Dodger game is to see the Cubs.

They certainly aren’t as angst-ridden as we are. Neither are Tigers fans.

Does anybody know
With all this money does he still get road food per diem ? And how much is it they get? And last question. WHY???
IIRC
it is something like $100-150 DAILY for MLB players

Holy hellsticks...
That would last me 2-3 WEEKS right now…
That's like 300-450 Ramen meals
Would have fed me for 1 year in college.

And if they win a championship in the next four years
No one will care.
WTF do you care what he is paid? Not your money. The Angels smell blood in the water and they think they can become THE dominant SoCal team.
I would have had NO problem had the Cubs paid that contract. I don’t care about 2022. I could be dead or pooping in a diaper by then. Screw 2022. 2022 can eat me.
The job is to win now.
"It's all in the game, yo"
But both of these teams that have good players already on them
So them having good years earlier pays differently than how they’ll likely be going down hill in 6-9 of years of their contract.
How many of the Cubs would crack an opening line up of a team that makes the play offs? I’m more worried about those 24 over the next 3 years years.

Anyone know...
…does these guys get bi-weekly paychecks?
I imagine 41 year old Albert waking up on a Friday, checking his bank account and seeing that another $1.1M has been deposited…
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Or seeing the $350,000 taken out for taxes...
That’s painful!
