Screaming, leaping, spraying water, mobbing each other, tearing at LaHair like he had done something memorable for the franchise. No, he did his job and rewarded fans with just the 61st victory in a 162 games.
The Cubs on-field celebration today was embarrassing. Sure, the excessive walkoff celebrations have taken on a life of their own, from shaving cream pies in-the-face to now tearing your teammate's jersey off.
But today was different. You had the second worst team in the league beat the worst team in the league. Nothing was accomplished by the Cubs other than preventing a 102nd loss. But regardless of who won, and long before the screams of unjustified joy rushed from the Cubs dugout onto the field, both of these forgettable teams were destined to leave the field with a combined 208 losses.
Perhaps it's because many of the players are young or fresh from the minors. Perhaps its because the vast majority of our players have no idea what it means to be on a winning MLB team.
Who knows. We have awhile to think about it before the next game.
