BBWAA Names Harper, Trout Rookies Of The Year

Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

This is about the least suspenseful award balloting in many years.

To no one's surprise, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals were named American League and National League Rookies of the Year, respectively, for the 2012 season in voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America, announced Monday.

In doing so, they matched the SB Nation balloting that I posted here at BCB earlier today. Or we matched them, whichever you prefer.

Harper was the youngest player in the major leagues in 2012; he didn't turn 20 until after the season ended, and still finished fifth in the NL in runs scored despite not being called up from the minor leagues until the end of April. He hit .330/.400/.643 with seven home runs after September 1 to help lead the Nats to the playoffs.

Trout had a season for the ages, not just for a 20-year-old rookie; he did things no one has ever done (first ever with 30+ HR, 45+ SB and 125+ runs, for example) and played outstanding defense in center field. The only question remaining about Trout for this year is whether he'll be named AL MVP as well. We'll find out Thursday.

For the first time this year, the BBWAA is releasing all the ballots. Go here and here to find out who cast votes for which players.
