Cubs Sign 4 To Minor-League Deals

Bob Levey

One of these names might be quite familiar to you, because he helped win a game for his team against the Cubs.

The headline tells the story; here are details from Tony Andracki at CSN Chicago:

The Cubs made some minor moves Wednesday, inking four players to deals just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Chicago signed outfielder Brian Bogusevic, infielder Alberto Gonzalez, outfielder Johermyn Chavez and catcher J.C. Boscan to minor league contracts.

Chavez is the only one of the four without major-league experience; he's never played above Double-A. The others are basically to have some roster depth and extra bodies to play spring-training games, but Bogusevic has at least some major-league possibility. He'll be 29 in February, and in parts of three seasons with the Astros has hit .227/.310/.346 with 11 home runs in 547 at-bats. Yes, that isn't great, and he's just average as an outfielder, and you can insert your own "Now we're taking guys the Astros don't want" joke here.

Bogusevic is a Chicago-area native (from Oak Lawn, played at De La Salle). You might remember him best for the walkoff grand slam he hit off Carlos Marmol August 16, 2011 in Houston, one of Marmol's most spectacular blown saves.
