Non-Tender Candidates: Third Basemen

The Cubs might be in the market for a third baseman in 2013. Here are some possible future candidates, if they get non-tendered by their team.

In the second of my series about possible non-tender candidates that could fill holes on the 2013 Cubs, I'm going to look at some third basemen who are on MLB Trade Rumors' list of possible non-tenders.

This list is obviously shorter than the list of starting pitchers, but there are still several possibilities. I've left off this list infielders who are more like utility types (Alexi Casilla, Brent Lillibridge, Wilson Valdez) and stuck to players who primarily play third base.

Casey McGehee: Well, here's a familiar name. McGehee came up through the Cubs system, was inexplicably waived at the end of the 2008 season, and proceeded to have two pretty good years for the Brewers. Since the end of 2010, he hasn't been very good. Dale Sveum was his hitting coach in Milwaukee; maybe Sveum could help him get back on track. I'd think McGehee is almost a lock to be non-tendered by the Yankees. He turned 30 last month.

Mark Reynolds: Reynolds played mostly first base for the Orioles in 2012, but that's largely because that's where they needed him; he could certainly switch back. Reynolds strikes out. A lot. But he also hits home runs -- averaging 34 per 162 games -- and walks a lot, which is why he has a decent .332 lifetime OBP despite a poor .235 lifetime BA.

Ryan Roberts: Roberts took over third base in Arizona from Reynolds and hit pretty well in 2011. He got off to a mediocre start in 2012 and found himself swapped to the Rays, where he ... pretty much continued in mediocrity. He'd be quite cheap, but he just turned 32. Looks like an older, righthanded version of Ian Stewart to me.

Speaking of Stewart, he appears on MLBTR's non-tender list. So does Luis Valbuena, although I can't imagine Theo and Jed non-tendering Valbuena, who is at the very least a decent utility player.

Mark Reynolds might be worth a flyer, to me, if non-tendered. What say you? Vote in the poll. The deadline for tendering contracts is November 30.
