Yikes.
Granted, it would be a minor league deal, which I more or less file under “no harm no foul”… but Ortiz is really, really bad. Like… makes RoLo look like Cy Young bad.
Ortiz has been worth over 1.0 WAR exactly twice in his career… 2002 being the last. That’s right… it will have been a DECADE since Ramon Ortiz was really a positive addition to a club. Heck… he’s only had positive WAR once since 2004!!!
Hopefully he’s being signed as the BP pitcher for Iowa… and nothing more.

IF he makes Iowa's team
he might be a “player/coach type” there. If he makes the team. If he straight out makes the team in Iowa, he’ll almost definitely be the long man in the bullpen.

your question and your answer
Don’t we have enough depth yet?
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said when he was hired on Oct. 21 that he wanted the pitching staff to go 10 deep in starting pitcher candidates.

I think we do too
Garza, Dumpster, Maholm, Wells, TWood, Volstad, Sonnanstine, Coleman, Rodrigo, Jay Jackson
Not including Shark because his days as a starter are finished, no matter what they say.
I think this would just be a signing to get someone with lots of experience, if not for Chicago, for Iowa. I also tend to think if he makes Iowa, he’ll be coming out of the ’pen, as that team will have a ton of rotation candidates.

Also McNutt could get some looks
and a couple other guys. Struck? this move wouldnt make sense. there’s even better retreads if they really want to do that.
Having guys in Iowa with experience
isn’t a bad thing. He has experience with being a ML starter, an ML reliever, a ML year long player, and a guy who rides the bus between AAA and MLB. I think he was signed to be a “player/coach” type in Iowa, being on the DL unless they’re short of pitchers, getting activated for a few games, then right back on the DL.

If you want him to be a coach in Iowa, sign him to be a coach.
He literally has nothing left to offer the Cubs as a player, and it’s not like we need more guys to fill out our AAA rotation.
I doubt he makes their rotation
And being a “player/coach” is essentially the first step in becoming a full time coach. Mark Johnson is a prime example in recent memory. I don’t get why people are fine with Bobby Scales being signed, and this riles people up. We’re just as likely to see Scales in Wrigley as we are to see Ortiz, i.e. the team will have to be absurdly decimated by injury for either to even sniff a chance of a call up.

People here fussed about Scales, too
See the thread, with cool graphics
But I don’ get it, either. He’s not going to block anyone, so who cares?
I agree with the general premise
But I see a couple important differences between Scales and Ortiz.
Scales has been a Cub for a while, so he’s got a track record with the organization. Scales has also performed relatively well at Iowa. Ortiz really has neither of those things going for him.

"No other teams have been publicly linked to Ortiz this offseason."
Shocking..
I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!
Oops
Meant to say “Theo’s compensation will be pitching”. Perhaps. Depleting our depth.
Still… I can’t see how this helps any team in any way.

This guy wasn't even good when he was "good".
His “best” season was 10 years ago, in 2002 for the Angels. And even then, he led the AL in home runs allowed.
I understand TheoJed are looking for pitching depth. But this is beyond scraping the bottom of the barrel.
No thanks.

JR Mathes
had better represent in March, no?
10-25-2011. Theo Epstein joins the Cubs. Now, the fun begins.
Alas, we cut him last year

If he's good enough to make the team.......
…… then he belongs, and the stupid whining about him should stop. Same for Rodrigo Lopez. If neither one are good enough, they won’t make it. Why people get themselves worked up over stuff like this is hilarious.
Chicago. Enough said.
Speaking of getting worked up and hilarious....
I don’t see a single person on this thread whining or getting worked up.
He's actually not a bad pitcher...
…if you roll the ‘R’ in his first name. Go ahead, try it.
