The Trib is reporting that the Cubs are signing Soler -- but other teams are in the mix, too.

$27+M, That would be great if it is indeed true.

dunno

The article says

Soler is waiting for official clearance from MLB before being declared a free agent, although he can be signed.

The article is pretty short on details, but it seems to be relaying “multiple” reports out of the DR.

This would be a great way to head into spring training.

I would rather have a 19 year old who needs time to develop over a 26 year old that needs less time to develop. A lineup with Jackson, Soler, Szczur, Rizzo, Castro, Baez, Clevenger or Castillo and maybe a free agent 2B or 3B may be in line for 2014-15.

The way I look at it,

we have options, with more on the way. Produce, or you’ll get dealt.

or...

produce and you will be dealt. Theo and co. have a good history of trading away productive/promising talent.

Soler, Jackson, Szcur… sure they could be the three OF, or, a couple might be traded for something else in a couple of years. Either way, this is fantastic.

Yes, they will always try and do what is needed to improve the "team"

instead of the Hendry way of taking care of the individual. Some will be dealt, but that is a nice core to start with.

Interesting.

I believe he can’t technically sign until he’s cleared by MLB? I won’t be totally confident until he is announced, but that’s a great sign.

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Also... Not a fan of this, and don't buy a report that claims
Soler, according to one report, will be making $27.5 million with the Cubs for three or four years.

It makes no sense for the Cubs to pay a 19 year old $27.5 million for 3 years – he wouldn’t even break camp with the Cubs. I don’t think we’re in the business of helping Cubans defect, so….

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

Not if he's signed as a "free agent"

There will be no excuses for not doing something the right way. - Dale Sveum

by santoswoodenlegs on Feb 13, 2012 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Not necessarily...

It would require a special clause in the contract. Even IFAs are subject to 6 years of team control. It would basically say the Cubs would not tender a contract after 3 years or 4 years respectively. Cespedes will have a similar agreement after 4 years (but he will start 2012 in the MLB, most likely, not A ball).

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

I love the Trib article

It’s about Soler, but with a picture of Cespedes, who is so 10 hours ago. Has Soler never taken a picture? Does he sleep in a different place every night?

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sure it includes a healthy signing bonus

Probably in the neighborhood of $10 million. It’s more likely a 4 year, $18 million deal. Still could look bad if he busts, but it could pay out huge if he fulfills his potential. The other 2 years of team control would be arbitration-based, unless there was an extension.

Cool

So he still will be being paid even if he’s not in the majors? So he gets paid more than 9 million to play in the minor for about 2 years? This guy better be a stud.

by Mitchener on Feb 13, 2012 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

Depends on how the contract is written, how he performs, and if the Cubs tender a contract.

The way the arb process works is the MINIMUM he can receive is 80% of the salary from his previous year. The overall salary has nothing to do with it, which is why athletes agree to backloaded deals.

For instance, if someone made 50 million over 2 years and they got paid $49 in year 1 and $1 year 2, they could technically be on the hook for Arbitration based on a $1 million salary.

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 10:42 PM CST up reply actions

Interesting

but does he make minimum 500k if he isn’t arb elgible and his contract is up?

by Mitchener on Feb 13, 2012 10:46 PM CST up reply actions

From the sound of it, his contract doesn't really "start" until he makes the majors.

I’m sure the Cubs are on the hook for the 27.5 million regardless of whether he makes it or not, but he would definitely be arb eligible from the sound of it.

Honestly though, there are SO few details, I don’t want to get hopes up or offer bad info here. I can offer my insight into how FA and IFA work here, but this is kind of a whole new can of worms. Clubs are getting VERY creative with the cap coming next year, and I don’t want to assume anything.

by bdlugz on Feb 13, 2012 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

Now THAT I'm okay with.

Give the kid a 10 million signing bonus and then pay him 4.3 per year for the 4 years of his rookie deal.

Exactly.

And then have the arbitration years on top of it.

Kap, as usual, is not reporting anything new.

He’s just saying that a deal isn’t in place cuz it can’t be (Soler still needs to establish residency/get clearance from MLB as a FA), which is just obvious and a rehash of every report about this deal. He also doesn’t understand the structure of the deal (explained clearly by Kevin Goldstein), calling it “ludicrous.”

He did the same thing with his “Tigers/Cubs close to deal for Garza” story which had zero new info and even less credibility.

I am a little tepid that this is really happening too, but I think it is just skepticism on my part. ALLLLLL indications are that this deal being done is a formality due to Soler’s work/residency status.

I don't think Baseball America has that right.

Here’s what the Tribune reported:

The Cubs are expected to add 19-year-old outfielder Jorge Soler after acquiring 19-year-old pitcher Gerardo Concepcion, according to multiple reports from the Dominican Republic, where Soler is staying.

No, he is not signed yet. No one is reporting that he is signed.

Could he have a handshake deal in place? Yes. Is that illegal within MLB or US law? No.

Kind of like a college player verbally committing to a university.

He’ll sign his letter of intent to lead the Cubs to the 2015 World Series here shortly.

Maybe he's the best at his job

if Soler ends up signing with the Cubs, he can claim he was the first to report it (at least the first stateside)

I was really hoping the Marlins wouldn't end up as competition, but comparing his power to Stanton's? He's better than I thought.
2:51pm: The Marlins are interested, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal hears Soler’s power is comparable to that of Miami outfielder Mike Stanton — high praise to say the least.

THEO BLUFFS!! BRILLIANT!!

IMHO, the front office never intended to sign Soler based on the high contract Cespedes got and the mass movement to sign young international talent while still possible under the CBA creating the perfect storm for an irrationally large contract for Soler. Instead, we bluffed.

Yankees, Phillies, and Marlins will now be in a bidding war that starts at 27.5 mil the Cubs offered. We got the lowest price. No question the Yankees will go after Soler if the Burnett trade goes through and the cap space is created.

Theo appears to be creating a smoke screen distracting teams from the 2013 FA class. Soler is good, but by no means a sure thing. Let’s move on now Cubs fans

I never blame myself when I'm not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn't my fault that I'm not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?

What?
heo appears to be creating a smoke screen distracting teams from the 2013 FA class.

So, all of those other teams will be out of the bidding for players 9 months from now??

And, who exactly is a “sure thing”?

Step Three: Patience. The plan is in place.

I don't get this

I can’t figure out why people are always thinking there’s all this subterfuge as far as free agents, like it’s some sort of strategy game. There’s no bluffing. If you want the guy, you get the guy. If you think you can do better by going another route, you do that.

What do we think somebody is going to be saying 8 months from now?

… Oh, crap, now we’ve got this kid in AA and we can’t sign Matt Cain!

… You guys, we got Soler, good job, take a year off.

… Dangit, Theo stuck us with a top 20 prospect and… wait, I’m OK with that.

… Hahaha the Yankees spent all their money and now they’re broke!

… OMG there’s free agents again this winter?

Wow.

No surprise, but the two teams in hardest on Jorge Soler right now are the Yankees and Phillies, two sources say. This will get expensive.

I'm pretty resigned

to us not getting Soler at this point. I really really hope we do, but it seems like that report came out that we had him and EVERYBODY came out of the woodwork all of a sudden to sign him.

I know its just a prospect, not that big of a deal, but it just feels like another usurping of the cubs chances in this weird way – Almost a microcosm of Cubdom if this signing doesn’t happen for us.

Wondering about stats

Easy enough to find Cuban League stats for Concepcion and Cespedes, but I cannot find the same for Soler. Unlike the first two players, stories covering Soler do not (that I’ve seen) mention his Cuban play.

I realize that Cuban baseball is mainly an amateur affair, but still, it would be nice to have some sort of quantitative data. He has actually played, hasn’t he?

by jawsofvictory on Feb 16, 2012 10:36 AM CST reply actions

He's played very little in the league that Cespedes played in.

He’s much younger, and from what I understand was only getting to that league at the time he defected.

by Orval Overall on Feb 16, 2012 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks Orval

I guess I was trying to figure out if there was anything solid behind the hype. The only solid fact I’ve seen is his sprint speed (above average). Many have remarked upon the hype machine that was turned on for Cespedes, but at least he has produced numbers that can be put into some type of context. That’s what scouts are for, I suppose.

No biggie, just curious.
