Around SBN: VIDEO: Veterans Share Favorite Sports Memories

An interview of Cheech Marin by SBN's Angels blogger, Rev Halofan. Of interest here because Cheech grew up near LA's Wrigley Field and attended games there, seeing Cubs farmhands; he says he was a big fan of Ernie Banks.

Like Jigger Statz and Steve Bilko, the Mad Russian is a PCL LA Angels Wrigley Field legend...

…who also played occasionally for the Wrigley family’s other big-market team here in Chicago. Of course, none of them found success with the Cubs, although the mere mention of Lou Novikoff was guaranteed to delight any Cubs fan of my parents’ generation.

Few remember Lou today, but watching Soriano play the outfield gives us some idea of how Novikoff handled the bricks and ivy. In fact, Lou’s fielding stats in 1942 – the one full year he played for the Cubs – actually look good by comparison to Fonzi’s numbers in 2010 & ’11.

A virtual who's who of elite recording artists circa 1974 took part:

Cheech as Tyrone Shoelaces on lead vocal; Darlene Love, Michelle Phillips and Ronnie Spector as cheerleaders; Carole King – electric piano; Nicky Hopkins – piano; Billy Preston – organ; George Harrison – lead guitar; Eric Clapton – 2nd lead guitar.
