Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 12

Anthony Rizzo is fine. He got a little boo-boo. Maybe he'll miss a couple of games and maybe he won't. Either way, it's going to make no difference in his or the Cubs long-term outlook.

The Boise Hawks arrived in the Treasure Valley today and were greeted by their host families, the Hawks Booster Club, and reporters from the Idaho Statesman and the local NBC affiliate. There's a picture of the mob at the airport at BoiseHawks.com and on Hawk announcer Mike Safford's blog.

This enthusiasm is uncommon for minor league teams and it speaks to why the Cubs want to keep their affiliate in Boise despite a sub-standard stadium. We can hope that the new stadium gets build soon.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs couldn't stop the thunder of the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 9-4.

Chris Volstad got hammered for five runs in the first inning. Although he did settle down after that, the damage had already been done. Volstad went five innings and allowed six runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Shortstop Luis Valbuena hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to make the score a little more respectable. It was his eighth home run of the year. Valbuena was 1 for 4.

Right fielder Ty Wright was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

DH Geovany Soto was 1 for 4 with a double in his rehab start.

Tennessee Smokies

Waiting for the Barons to get to town.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs speared the Brevard County Manatees (Brewers), 8-3.

Eduardo Figueroa pitched the first three innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Figueroa did not issue a walk and struck out four.

Ryan Searle got the win since Figueroa didn't go five innings. Searle pitched two scoreless innings. He gave up four hits but didn't walk anyone. The Aussie struck out two as he improved his record to 4-1.

Left fielder Nelson Perez went 3 for 4 with his eleventh home run of the year: a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning. Perez scored twice.

First baseman Greg Rohan was 2 for 5. He scored twice and had one RBI. Rohan leads the Florida State League with 55 RBI.

Right fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 5 with an RBI. He stole his 18th base of the season.

Peoria Chiefs

Peoria's seven-game win streak came to an end as they lost a finger to the Beloit Snappers (Twins), 5-4.

Michael Jensen started and took the loss. He gave up five runs over 4.2 innings, although the Chiefs defense did him no favors and two of the runs were unearned. Jensen walked two and struck out five.

The Chiefs committed five errors tonight. Three of the errors were committed by shortstop Javier Baez. But he had a good night at the plate, going 2 for 4 with his sixth stolen base. He also scored once.

Second baseman Zeke DeVoss, one day after making SportsCenter, was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored once and batted one in.
