Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 27

I thought we all needed some tranquility after today. (Photo by Bryn Lennon/Getty Images)

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 10-6.

Chris Rusin had trouble keeping the ball in the yard tonight as he gave up three home runs in 4+ innings. Rusin gave up eight runs on seven hits. One of the eight runs was unearned. He walked three and struck out two.

One of the three home runs Rusin allowed was to Cub-killer Mike Hessman, who hit a second one off of Alberto Cabrera in the sixth inning. Hessman has now hit seven home runs in five games against Iowa this season.

First baseman Josh Vitters extended his hitting streak to ten games by going 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. He also walked once. Vitters scored twice and had one RBI.

Before anyone asks, I'm sure that Vitters playing first base today is only because with Anthony Rizzo in Chicago, the Iowa Cubs currently do not have a regular first baseman on their roster.

Shorstop Matt Tolbert went 2 for 5 with a double. He had an RBI and a run scored. Center fielder Dave Sappelt was 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Third baseman Diory Hernandez was 2 for 4 and scored a run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were plundered by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 11-0.

Dae-Eun Rhee started and took the loss. Rhee allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Smokies had two hits tonight and three errors.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs massacred the St. Lucie Mets, 12-1.

Austin Kirk improved his record to 4-1 with six shutout innings. He gave up five hits and he walked two. Kirk struck out six.

Center fielder Matt Szczur hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth inning. It was Szczur's second home run this year. Szczur also doubled 3 for 6 game. He scored twice and he had the four RBI.

DH Greg Rohan was 5 for 5 with two doubles. He scored twice and had two RBI.

Second baseman Ronald Torreyes went 2 for 5 with a double. He scored once and had one RBI. Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara was 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were cut down by the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners), 8-3.

Starter Jose Rosario pitched five innings and took the loss. He surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits. Rosario walked one and struck out four.

Third baseman Dustin Geiger was 2 for 4 and scored in the ninth.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks were swept by the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 6-2.

Tayler Scott gave up five runs in the second inning, but he didn't get much help from his defense as two errors made all five runs unearned. Scott lasted 3.1 innings and allowed the five runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez went 2 for 5 with an RBI double in the fifth, which scored catcher Lance Rymel, who had doubled for his first professional hit. Rymel was 1 for 3. His double had plated center fielder Shawon Dunston, who went 2 for 4.

AZL Cubs

Beat the Angels, 5-4.

Shortstop David Bote's first professional hit was a home run off of the rehabbing Trevor Bell.
