Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were zapped by the New Orleans Zephyrs, (Marlins), 2-1.

The hard-luck loss went to starter Brooks Raley, who allowed two runs on six hits over six innings. Raley walked four and struck out eight.

The only Iowa run came on a second-inning moon shot by center fielder Brett Jackson. It was Jackson's fifteenth home run on the year. Jackson was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were sunburned by the Jacksonville Suns (Marliins), 8-5.

Starter Nick Struck struggled through four innings tonight, allowing four runs on seven hits. Struck walked one and struck out three.

The Smokies made it close when first baseman Justin Bour hit a grand slam in the seventh inning. It was Bour's eleventh home run this year. He went 2 for 4 with five total runs batted in.

Center fielder Matt Szczur had his first Double-A hit in the first inning. He was 1 for 4 with a walk and a run scored.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were hijacked by the Bradenton Marauders (Pirates), 9-7.

It was a tough start for Kyler Burke, who put the D-Cubs in a big hole by allowing seven runs over five innings. He allowed the seven runs on eight hits, and two of those runs were unearned. Burke walked two and struck out six.

Daytona was able to fight back and tie the game with a four-run sixth inning, but Jeffrey Lorick pitched the eighth inning and gave up two runs on three hits. One of those runs was unearned. Lorick did not walk anyone and struck out two in his one inning of work.

Daytona tied the game in the sixth inning on a three-run home run by second baseman Ronald Torreyes. It was his fifth home run of the season. Torreyes also doubled in a 3 for 5 game.

Third baseman Timothy Saunders was 2 for 4 with a double. Saunders scored once and had one RBI.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were snapped in two by the Beloit Snappers (Twins), 10-4.

Chiefs starter Starling Perlata got the loss after allowing five runs on five hits over five innings. One of those runs was unearned. Peralta walked two and fanned six.

The Chiefs had cut the Snappers' lead to 5-4 going into the ninth, but Beloit plated five runs in the ninth inning to put the game away, mostly off of Luis Liria. Liria went 1.2 innings and allowed four runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out one.

Catcher Sergio Burruel was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks shut out the Tri-City Dust Devils (Rockies), 1-0, It was their first 1-0 win in almost two years.

It was an impressive start for Tayler Scott, who gave up four hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Even better was Hayden Simpson, whose only allowed one baserunner, a single in the sixth inning, over his three innings of relief. Simpson had one strike out.

Eddie Orozco got his first professional save after pitching the ninth inning. He walked one but did not allow a hit. Orozco struck out two.

Catcher Carlos Escobar was 2 for 2 with a double and a walk. He scored the game's lone run in the third inning on a two-out Jeimer Candelario single.

It was Bill Buckner Bobblehead Night at Memorial Stadium, and Billy Buck got to manage the final five innings of the game after manager Mark Johnson was ejected in the fifth inning. Weirdest ejection I've ever seen. He was talking to Scott on the mound and the umpire must have overheard something he didn't like and tossed him.

AZL Cubs

Rained out.
