Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 11

I took pretty much the whole day off from baseball and spent it with my family. I guess I missed a big event in Peoria.

Everyone who didn't get rained out won.

Iowa Cubs

It rained in Las Vegas tonight, which I think was just an excuse to hit the Strip early. They'll pick it up tomorrow where they left off, with Iowa leading 5-2 in the top of the fifth. (Not really on that Strip thing. I know from experience people will think I'm serious if I don't say that.)

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies blotted out the Huntsville Stars (Brewers) 2-0.

Starter Dae-Eun Rhee kept the Stars off the board for six innings. He was touched for six hits. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone as he collected his eighth win.

Tony Zych pitched the next two innings perfectly (with three strikeouts) and Brian Schlitter threw the ninth and got his fourth save. Schlitter allowed a one-out single but no other baserunners. He had one strikeout.

Center fielder Matt Szczur was 2 for 3 with a walk. Second baseman Matt Cerda was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.

Daytona Cubs

It's Florida in August, man. They were rained out with a double-header tomorrow.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs ran past the Beloit Snappers (Twins), 5-3.

Starter Zach Cates pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Luis Liria had struggled badly over his last five appearances, but he got the win tonight after 2.1 scoreless innings because Cates didn't go five. He retired all seven batters he faced, three by a strike out. A nice bounce-back.

Larry Suarez was summoned from the bullpen with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth. He ended the game with a pop up. It was his second save.

All the scoring Peoria needed came in the third inning when right fielder Jorge Soler hit a grand slam home run. You can kind of watch it here. It was Soler's first Peoria home run and third of the year. Soler was 1 for 4 with a walk.

Shortstop Wes Darvill was 3 for 4 with a double and the other Peoria RBI.

Boise Hawks.

The Boise Hawks won their sixth game out of their last seven by capping the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 4-1.

Pierce Johnson made his Boise debut, pitching the first two innings. He allowed a run on four hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out two. He exited with a 2-1 lead.

Felix Pena got the win because Johnson didn't got five. Pena did throw five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. Pena walked one and struck out four.

Eddie Orozco got a two-inning save tonight. Orozco allowed a two-out single in the ninth inning, but nothing else. Orozco struck out one in his fourth save.

Right fielder Izaac Garcez hit his first Boise home run tonight with a man on in the second inning. Garsez was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Catcher Willson Contreras went 3 for 4. He scored twice. Center fielder Trey Martin was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run batted in. Second baseman Gioskar Amaya was 2 for 5.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez doubled in the third inning to extend his hit streak to 16 games. He was 1 for 4.

First baseman Dan Vogelbach was 1 for 4 with an RBI, ending his home run streak at five.

AZL Cubs

Beat the Angels, 8-3.

Albert Almora was 3 for 5. Garrett Schlecht stole three bases.
