Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 19

This is Wrigley Field from last season, but it might as well be Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach after four rain outs in the past eight days--and one more on the road. (Photo by Brian Kersey/Getty Images)

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs made the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) blue, 6-3.

Yoanner Negrin's first Iowa start was a successful one as he pitched four innings, allowing only one run. Negrin gave up six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Ryan Searle got his first Triple-A win since Negrin didn't go five innings. Searle didn't allow a run over four innings and only one hit. Searle walked one and struck out three.

Third baseman Greg Rohan put the I-Cubs up early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. It was Rohan's twentieth home run of the year and his third for Iowa. Rohan went 2 for 3. He also doubled and was intentionally walked once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies edged the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 6-5.

Starter Dallas Beeler pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on three hits. All the runs scored on home runs as Beeler allowed a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo home run in the second. One of the three runs was unearned. Beeler walked two and did not strike anyone out.

Tony Zych pitched the top of the sixth inning and got the win when the Smokies scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Zych hit the first batter he faced, but promptly erased him with a double-play and then got the third batter to pop out.

Fireman Frank Batista got his 23rd save. He pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits in the ninth. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one.

First baseman Justin Bour was 2 for 4 and scored a run. Michael Burgess had an pinch-hit double in the fifth inning that scored Tennessee's first run. He later scored in that inning.

Daytona Cubs

Well, they got one inning of baseball in before the rains came. Tomorrow is an off-day, and the team is planning on spending it building an ark. The league will decide if, when and where the games will be made up tomorrow.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs defanged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 4-3.

Starter Yao-Lin Wang got his fourth win after tossing a season-high 6.1 innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. Wang walked two and struck out seven.

Larry Suarez entered the game with one out in the ninth and runners on first and second. After retiring the first batter on a ground out, he allowed a two-out single that scored one runner and put runners on first and third. But he then got a pop up to end the game and collect his third save.

DH Dustin Geiger hit a solo home run in the third inning. He was 1 for 4 and had another RBI with a sacrifice fly. Geiger now has sixteen home runs this season.

Second baseman Zeke DeVoss led off the game with a triple and scored on Geiger's sac fly. DeVoss went 1 for 3 with two walks. DeVoss is now tied for the Midwest League lead in walks with 76.

Center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
