Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 29

I went back to the Grizzlies game tonight since they wanted to give me a free ticket. Special note to Tat14 on Konrad Schmidt: That's an 80 mustache if I've ever seen one.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were silenced by the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 3-0.

Starter Ryan Rowland-Smith took the loss, even though he only allowed two runs over five innings and even one of the two runs was unearned. He gave up five hits. Rowland-Smith walked two and struck out two.

Third baseman Diory Hernandez had two doubles in a 2 for 4 game.

The Iowa Cubs are scheduled to head to New Orleans to finish the season tomorrow. That should be interesting.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies rode the bus to Pensacola, Florida for their final series of the year. Again, that should be interesting.

The Smokies will have to sweep the five-game series with Pensacola and the Birmingham Barons will have to sweep Chattanooga for the Smokies to have a chance at making the post-season.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs split a double-header with the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies), winning game one 4-1 and losing the nightcap 3-1 in eight innings.

In the first game, P.J. Francescon allowed a run on two hits and a walk in the first inning and then only allowed one baserunner for the next five innings. Francescon got his eighth win, and third with Daytona, allowing only one run on three hits over six innings. He gave up one walk and struck out three.

A.J. Morris pitched the seventh inning for his sixth save. He allowed a lead-off single, but then erased him in a double play. He didn't walk or strike anyone out.

Third baseman Christian Villanueva hit a solo home run in the third inning, his fourth with the Cubs and fourteenth overall. Villanueva was 2 for 3 and scored twice.

In the second game, Frank Del Valle allowed only one run, a solo home run in the fourth inning. Del Valle pitched five innings and gave up four hits. He walked two and struck out six.

Jeffrey Lorick took the loss in relief, He pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two.

First baseman Rebel Ridling hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was his fourth for Daytona and twelfth of the season. Ridling was 1 for 3.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were harvested by the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Angels), 9-5.

Yao-Lin Wang didn't have much today. He pitched four innings and got hammered for nine runs on eight hits. At least two of the runs were unearned. Wange walked two and struck out four.

The Chiefs fell behind 9-0 but fought back to make a game of it. Right fielder Jorge Soler was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. He scored two runs.

Second baseman Zeke DeVoss was 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice. DeVoss took over the Midwest League lead in walks and is tied for the league lead in runs scored.

Boise Hawks

The Big Green Machine kept rolling as the Boise Hawks defeated the the Everett AquaSox (Mariners), 9-5.

Starter Tayler Scott pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. One of the three runs was unearned. He walked two and struck out one.

Michael Heesch threw two scoreless innings to get the win. He allowed one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one.

The Big Green Machine won the game with a five-run sixth inning. The inning started with first baseman Dan Vogelbach's tenth home run for the Hawks. Vogelbach was 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice.

The other big blow in the sixth was a two-run double by right fielder Rock Shoulders. Shoulders went 2 for 4 and scored after his double when Trey Martin doubled him home. Martin was 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored two runs. Third baseman Stephen Bruno was 2 for 3 with two walks and a run batted in.

Center fielder Albert Almora was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored two runs.

AZL Cubs

Regular season over. The Cubs rookie ball team finished at 37-19, which earned them the wild card in the playoffs which start tomorrow. Rookie ball playoffs are just one game affairs.
