Joe Girardi Signs 4 Year Deal With The Yankees

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Cubs first choice for their vacant managerial job has decided to keep his current job.

He's not coming to Wrigley.

The Yankees and their manager Joe Girardi agreed on a four year deal to remain as Yankees manager. The Yankees had made it clear that they wanted Girardi to stay and the lure of Yankees as well as his desire to not uproot his family proved to be stronger than the pull of returning to Illinois and the challenge of leading the Cubs to the World Series.

So the Cubs search for a new manager goes on. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer were not simply waiting on Girardi and they knew that the odds were against him leaving the Bronx for the North Side all along. They have interviewed former Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch and former Indians and Nationals manager Manny Acta already. They plan on interviewing Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as well. There may be other names out there that we have not yet heard.

Girardi was clearly intrigued by the idea of returning to the Cubs as he took several days to accept the Yankees offer. But the Cubs will move on without him. And while there is no doubt that Girardi is a good manager in New York, there were some questions as to how much experience he has working with and developing young players. In the end, we won't know if this was good news or bad news for the Cubs for a long, long time.
