As has been rumored for a few days now, the Diamondbacks hired McKay to be their 1B coach. The Cubs front office likely wanted their new manager to consider McKay for their staff, however McKay had some concerns about remaining with a team in an extended rebuild. He's 64 years old and isn't sure how much longer he'll coach. McKay did a great job bringing some professionalism to the club and also did a good job working with outfielders (see Soriano, Alfonso). This may have been one cost of an extended coaching search. McKay was a Cubs employee until yesterday. Its possible that had the Cubs filled their managerial position already, McKay could have been retained (however there's no guarantee that he would have). Similarly, Chris Bosio has developed some cache and it would not be a shock to see him hired elsewhere. That all said, as important as these coaches are, they need to get the manager hire right.
