Cubs Rumors: Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard On Radar

Jonathan Ernst

The Cubs are reportedly interested in two Nationals relief pitchers.

After waiting around all day for the Cubs to do something, they still haven't.

But! Gordon Wittenmyer of the Sun-Times has some fresh rumors for us:

As noted by Gordo, neither Drew Storen nor Tyler Clippard is a free agent; either would have to be acquired by trade. Both have closing experience, although neither was in that role for the Nationals in 2013.

Clippard is 28 and posted a 2.59 ERA with an outstanding 0.859 WHIP for the Nats last season, although with a fairly large total of nine home runs in 71 innings. He is under team control through 2015.

Storen is 26 and was the Nats' No. 1 pick (10th overall) in 2009. He was a solid reliever, including 43 saves in 2011, until last year when he posted his career-worst numbers, a 4.52 ERA with a 1.362 WHIP. Storen is under team control through 2016.

These types of pitchers are exactly the type Theo should be going after -- relatively young with a few years of team control left, yet with big-league experience. Both pitched for the Nats in the 2012 playoffs.
