The Cubs have begun to assemble in Mesa for spring training; the first spring game is February 23. Here's your complete numerical guide to the 2013 Cubs spring roster.
There are 63 players in camp this spring, which includes 23 non-roster invitations. If that seems like a lot, remember that probably two-thirds of those non-roster guys (plus some players who are rostered like Jorge Soler) have zero chance at the 25-man roster this year. With the World Baseball Classic this year and many players away from their teams, games are starting earlier and therefore teams need more bodies to play, especially with the odd number of teams in the Cactus League and more split-squad games.
You can really see the makeover this winter of the Cubs by Theo and Jed. Of the 63 players, 25 of them weren't in the organization at all in 2012, including seven rostered players. Some of the non-roster guys will likely wind up sticking around at Triple-A Iowa to be backups in case of injury. It'll be one of the more interesting springs in recent years.
A couple of number notes: you'll see that two people are listed with No. 40; that's because Rick Sutcliffe, in camp to be an instructor, gets to wear his old Cubs number even though James Russell will wear it for the 2013 team. The lowest number not issued this year (unless Tony Campana doesn't return on a NRI to reclaim No. 1) is 62. Players whose names are boldfaced/underlined have links to their SB Nation player pages. You'll also note that the minor-league coaches serving as spring-training instructors are all from either Iowa or Tennessee; in the past, some Daytona staff has assisted, but this year, presumably those guys will be exclusively in the minor-league camp.
And while we're on the topic of Cubs uniform numbers, here's my annual shameless plug. If you don't yet have your copy of "Cubs By The Numbers", the book co-authored by me, BCBer kaseyi and Matt Silverman, you can order yours at this link.
