Super Bowl XLVII: This Man Could Have Been A Cub

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick was drafted by the Cubs as a pitcher. This is a more-or-less shameless attempt to make a tenuous Cubs connection to the Super Bowl.

You almost certainly already know the story: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was once drafted by the Cubs, as a righthanded pitcher out of Nevada-Reno, whose most famous major-league alums are probably Lyle Overbay and Chad Qualls.

You can see his name on the 2009 Cubs draft list; he was selected in the 43rd round. That's the same draft where the Cubs picked Brett Jackson with their No. 1 pick and the since-traded D.J. LeMahieu in the second round. Two others selected in that draft have played in the major leagues for the Cubs -- Brooks Raley and Chris Rusin. Four others picked that year: Nick Struck, Trey McNutt, Austin Kirk and Wes Darvill, have at least outside shots at playing in the big leagues someday. Struck, in fact, was chosen just four rounds before Kaepernick.

This post is for you to use to discuss Sunday's Super Bowl; it's got at least the tenuous Cubs connection of Kaepernick. Kaepernick's a big guy -- 6-5, 230. What kind of pitcher would he have made?

Kickoff for Sunday's game between the 49ers and Baltimore Ravens is set for (approximately) 5:30 p.m. CT. Enjoy the game, and remember: the most important thing about it is that when it's over, baseball season starts.
