Now that the silly Super Bowl is over, we can start paying attention to the sport that really matters: baseball. I hear that once spring training starts, ESPN is going to feature baseball every night on SportsCenter. I'm just kidding. They're going to keep talking about the NFL draft, Tim Tebow and imaginary girlfriends. Baseball will get mentioned right after the hockey scores. At least there is the MLB Network now.

• Speaking of football and ESPN, Jayson Stark argues that there is far more parity in baseball than in the NFL. Let's not even mention the NBA, where their salary cap insures that three teams won't win 11 of the past 14 titles or four teams winning 17 of the last 22. Oh, wait.
• Jim Caple asks "WAR. What is it good for?" and says "A lot but not as much as some people think." Our own Rob Neyer says Caple is arguing with a straw man.
• Steve Dilbeck in the Los Angeles Times asks if the Dodgers can retake the title of the most popular team in LA from the Lakers.
• I doubt this story will shock anyone around here, but apparently Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone didn't get along too well last season. They've vowed to recapture their chemistry, says Harrelson. If they don't, I suppose "He Gone."
• Jeff Sullivan in Fangraphs looks at players other than Adam Greenberg who had been hit by a pitch in their only major league plate appearance. The only one in recent history is John Rheinecker, who was an American League pitcher.
• Masahiro Tanaka is the latest Japanese pitcher who has caught the attention of the Rangers.
• With the Uptons playing together in Atlanta, Bruce Markusen in the Hardball Times looks back at the Alou brothers.
• Corey Hart's rehab is ahead of schedule. Insert your own sunglasses at night joke here.
• The Tigers need depth, according to George Sipple in the Detroit Free Press. Newspapers are apparently in such trouble that they're giving them away in Detroit.
• Kevin Millwood has retired. Last year with the Mariners, Millwood was 6-12 with a 4.25 ERA. He won 169 games over his career, which is pretty darn good.
• The Yankees have signed Travis Hafner and the Mets have signed Marlon Byrd.
• The construction of the Marlins new stadium came in under budget. Guess who gets to keep the money?
• Matt Joyce will get a lot of playing time in 2013.
• Former NL Rookie of the Year Earl Williams has died at age 64.
