Cubs Minor League Wrap: April 14

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The three Cubs teams that managed to play today all won and the Cougars continue their snow vacation in Appleton. Great pitching and timely hitting all around.

Did you know that "Don't Bring Me Down" was the Electric Light Orchestra's biggest US hit, whereas "Xanadu" was their biggest in the UK? Also, for some reason the Smokies were playing ELO's rather forgotten 1979 single "Last Train To London" (Which reached #39 on the US Billboard charts) as someone's walk-up music tonight. At least, I'd forgotten that song.

SWEEP!

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs smashed the Albuquerque Isotopes (Dodgers), 4-1 for their second win in a row over a team that has had their number for almost two seasons.

A great start for Chris Rusin as he picked up his first win of the season. Rusin gave up only one run on four hits over the first seven innings. Rusin did not walk anyone and fanned four.

Zach Putnam threw the final two innings without allowing a hit for his first save this year. He walked one and struck out three.

Iowa took the lead with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by first baseman Brad Nelson. Nelson was 1 for 4.

Catcher Luis Flores added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo home run. It was his second home run of the season. Flores was 1 for 4.

Center fielder Brian Bogusevic went 2 for 4 and scored a run.

Two Cubs were rehabbing with Iowa today. Second baseman Darwin Barney played the whole game and was 0 for 1 with three walks, a stolen base and he scored on Nelson's single. Third baseman Ian Stewart played seven innings and was 0 for 3 with a bases-loaded walk that forced in Rusin for the first Iowa run of the game.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies clouded the vision of the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 7-3.

Starter Dae-Eun Rhee dominated today as he retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a one-out double in the fifth. Rhee pitched six scoreless innings and allowed only that one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three as he got his first win of 2013.

Right fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and a walk. Ha scored once and had one RBI.

Second baseman Ronald Torreyes was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored a run in the first inning and had an RBI single in the seventh.

Third baseman Jonathan Mota was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Left fielder Rubi Silva was 2 for 4.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs scored three times in the seventh inning to bust the Tampa Yankees, 3-1.

Zach Cates got his first win after allowing only one run on four hits over six innings. Cates walked three and struck out four.

Frank Del Valle struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his second save.

Third baseman Ben Carhart gave Daytona the lead in the seventh with a two-run double, scoring Stephen Bruno and Dustin Geiger. Carhart would later score on a Micah Gibbs double. Carhart was 1 for 4.

Gibbs was 2 for 4 with that RBI double. Geiger was 2 for 4. Bruno was also 2 for 4, with his sixth multi-hit game in the first ten games this season.

Kane County Cougars

Here's what Fox Cities Stadium looked like today. The games will be made up in June at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.
