Cubs Minor League Wrap: April 18

Ralph Freso

The Smokies got past Huntsville in extra innings and while Kane County took the River Bandits to extras, they lost their fifth straight game to the Baby 'Stros. It's all feast or famine in Florida.

Iowa Cubs

The I-Cubs were rained out. They'll play a double-header with Nashville on June 21.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies dimmed the Huntsville Stars (Brewers), 5-3 in 11 innings.

Starter Kyle Hendricks exited after a three-run second inning. He allowed five hits and a walk while not striking out anyone.

After that, the Smokies bullpen extinguished the Stars bats for the next nine innings. They only allowed two more hits the rest of the way and none until the tenth inning, although they did walk six batters. Kevin Rhoderick tossed two scoreless innings. Marcus Hatley chipped in with 1.2 innings and Tony Zych faced seven batters and retired them all, one by way of the strikeout.

Trey McNutt got the win. He pitched two innings and allowed one hit and he walked one. McNutt did not have a strikeout. Frank Batista pitched the bottom of the eleventh for his third save. Batista did allow a one-out double, but nothing else. Batista also did not have a strikeout.

The Smokies went ahead in the top of the eleventh when pinch-hitter Jair Hernandez walked with the bases loaded.

Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara was 3 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored one run. First baseman Justin Bour had three RBI: two on a single in the third inning and one on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Bour was 1 for 3 with three walks and was hit by a pitch twice.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs came two field goals short of the Tampa Yankees, 13-7.

P.J. Francescon pitched the first three innings and got clubbed for seven runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Eduardo Figueroa took the loss. He threw three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out two.

Second baseman Stephen Bruno was only 2 for 5 with a double tonight, which lowered his batting average to .407. He scored one run and batted one in.

Shortstop Javier Baez was 2 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. He also scored one run. Center fielder Zeke DeVoss was 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI. Third baseman Ben Carhart was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored two runs and knocked one in.

Catcher Chad Noble went 3 for 4 with a walk and a run scored.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars just can't bring the Quad City River Bandits (Astros) to justice, 9-8 in ten innings.

Lendy Castillo started and allowed five runs in the second inning. But that was the only time they scored on him over his four innings of work. He allowed seven hits and he walked two while striking out six.

Steve Perakslis actually pitched the best of the three Cougar pitchers, but he got the loss when he allowed a one-out RBI double in the top of the tenth. That was the only run he allowed over 2.1 innings. He gave up two total hits and one costly walk to the batter before the double. Perakslis struck out one.

Catcher Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run in the second inning, his second on the season. Contreras went 2 for 4 with a walk.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 3 for 5, although he was caught stealing twice which negates a bit of that. Hernandez did score once and had one run batted in.

Second baseman Gioskar Amaya had a pair of doubles in a 2 for 5 game. He scored two runs. First baseman Daniel Vogelbach was 2 for 5 with one run scored and one batted in. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
