Cubs Minor League Wrap: April 23

USA Today Sports

Trying to stay optimistic, Kane County was rained out again today. The bats were absent in Iowa and Daytona while the Smokies closer blew a save.

There wasn't a lot of action in the minors today. Or good news. So let's keep this brief. And yes, I am a Eurythmics fan.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Memphis Redbids (Cardinals), 4-1.

Nick Struck didn't pitch poorly, but he got the loss anyway after he gave up two runs on five hits over six innings. He walked two and did not strike out anyone.

The I-Cubs got their only run when center fielder Brian Bogusevic doubled in the seventh inning and first baseman Brad Nelson singled him home. Bogusevic was 1 for 4 and Nelson was 1 for 3.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies gave up three runs in the top of the ninth to get shocked by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 4-3.

It was a truly excellent start for Kyle Hendricks, who allowed only one run on three hits over seven innings. He walked only one and struck out nine.

Trey McNutt blew the save with the three runs in the ninth. He allowed three hits, including two doubles, and he walked two. McNutt did not have a strikeout.

First baseman Jonathan Mota was 2 for 4 with a double and his first home run of the season. It was a solo home run in the second inning. The double just missed being a two-run home run, but did plate Johermyn Chavez for his second RBI. Chavez was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.

Third baseman Christian Villanueva went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were shut out by the Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-0.

P.J. Francescon took the hard-luck loss to drop his record to 1-2. Francescon allowed only one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Daytona managed four hits all game. DH Ben Carhart was 2 for 3 with a double.

Daytona struck out ten times and only walked once. If you want some good news, it was Javier Baez who had the walk.

Kane County Cougars

You know it's a bad day down on the farm when the best news is that Kane County had their seventh postponement of the season. They have an off-day tomorrow as they travel to Fort Wayne.
