Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 11

Scott Halleran

Everyone who played, won in the Cubs system today. The Smokies finally ended their losing streak and the Cougars got to two games over .500 for the first time this season. But the weather bug has moved south to Florida as the D-Cubs double-header was rained out.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs trumped the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks), 4-1.

It was a good start for Guillermo Moscoso, who gave up only one unearned run over seven innings of work. He surrendered six hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

Blake Parker pitched the ninth inning for his fifth save. He did not allow a hit or a run. He struck out one.

Center fielder Dave Sappelt gave the I-Cubs an early lead when he hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Sappelt was 2 for 4.

Left fielder Brett Jackson was 2 for 5 with a double and a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning that accounted for Iowa's other two runs. Catcher J.C. Boscan was 2 for 4 with a double and he scored a run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defenestrated the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-4. The win ended the Smokies seven game losing streak and the Baron's eleven game winning streak.

The big news here is that Matt Garza made another rehab assignment and he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings. He got into trouble in the first inning after loading the bases with only one out (although an error played a role there), but he got a strike out and a fly out to end the threat. Garza gave up three hits. He walked two and struck out two. He was pulled after 66 pitches. 40 of which were strikes.

Garza is expected to make one final rehab start before returning to the Cubs rotation.

Matt Loosen relieved Garza and collected his first win of the season. Loosen gave up three runs on two hits, including a two-run home run in the eighth. Loosen walked four and struck out six in the four innings he pitched.

Marcus Hatley got his first save of the year, but it wasn't without drama. In the ninth inning he allowed a run and then loaded the bases with one out before stranding the tying run at third with a pop out and a strike out. Hatley pitched 1.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Third baseman Christian Villanueva was 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run batted in. Center fielder Matt Szczur was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases. Szczur scored in the first and fifth innings and also had a two-RBI single in the fifth.

Left fielder Ty Wright was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He also robbed the Barons' Andy Wilkins of a home run in the sixth inning.

Daytona Cubs

Today's double-header was cancelled because of rain. It will not be made up.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars dethroned the Clinton Lumberkings (Mariners), 7-4.

Michael Heesch wasn't anywhere near as good today as he was in his last brilliant start, but he got his second win in a row anyway. Heesch pitched six innings and allowed four runs on twelve hits. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

Brian Smith pitched the final three innings for his first career save. Smith pitched three shutout innings, allowing only two hits. He did not walk anyone and he struck out three.

Catcher Willson Contreras homered to lead off the sixth inning, giving Kane County a 4-3 lead that they would never relinquish. It was Contreras's fourth home run this season. Contreras also doubled in a 3 for 5 game. He scored two runs and knocked two home. Contreras also stole a base.

Left fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 5 with a double.
