Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 26

Blake Parker - Thearon W. Henderson

Iowa is red-hot lately and has played their way back into contention. The Smokies won behind a solid start by Eric Jokisch. Daytona and Kane County both lost close ones.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs swept a double-header from the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 2-1 and 4-3. Iowa has now won eight of their last nine games, including five in a row and have climbed to within 3.5 games of first place. (They're still two games under .500 though.)

In the first game, Barret Loux started and got the win. He allowed one run on three hits over the first six innings. He walked three and struck out six.

Blake Parker pitched a perfect seventh inning for his seventh save. Parker struck out one.

Almost all the offense in game one came from third baseman Edwin Maysonet. He doubled and scored in the third inning and hit a solo home run in the fifth. It was his fourth home run this season. Maysonet was 2 for 2.

In game two, Yoanner Negrin pitched the first 4.1 innings. Negrin allowed two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Reliever Marcus Hatley allowed a run in the sixth inning but got the win when Iowa scored in the bottom of the inning. Hatley allowed one run on a hit and a walk over 1.2 innings. He also hit a batter to lead off the sixth, and that was the runner that came around to score on a wild pitch. Hatley struck out two.

Zach Putnam pitched a perfect seventh inning for his fourth save. He struck out one.

Second baseman Logan Watkins homered to lead off the bottom of the first. It was his fifth home run this season. Watkins went 1 for 3.

Shortstop Donnie Murphy hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to give Iowa the lead for good. Murphy was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning for two RBI. He was 1 for 2.

The other run came in two batters after Murphy was hit when Maysonet was hit again with the bases loaded. He went 0 for 2 in game two.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies blasted the Hunstville Stars (Brewers) out of orbit, 5-2.

Eric Jokisch improved his record to 4-3 after allowing two runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. Jokisch fanned six and didn't walk anyone.

Frank Batista had a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save. He struck out one.

First baseman Tim Torres gave the Smokies an early 2-0 lead when he hit his second home run of the season with a man on. Torres was 1 for 3.

Right fielder Matthew Szczur was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored once and had one RBI. Center fielder Rubi Silva went 2 for 4 with a double.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were eaten by the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 5-3.

P.J. Francescon started and took the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits over six innings. Francescon walked three and struck out six.

Right fielder Jorge Soler hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his seventh of the season. Soler was 1 for 4.

Center fielder Zeke DeVoss was 3 for 4 with a walk. Catcher Chadd Krist was 2 for 4 with a double.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars were bitten by the Beloit Snappers (Athletics), 6-5.

Starter Tayler Scott threw 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Eddie Orozco took the loss in relief as part of a four-run sixth inning for Beloit. He allowed two inherited runners to score and two runs of his own in that inning. His final line was 2.1 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Second baseman Gioskar Amaya hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning. He was 1 for 4.

Left fielder Pin-Chieh Chen went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored two runs. Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a run batted in.
