Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 30

USA TODAY Sports

The Smokies had strong starting pitching and timely hitting to down Birmingham. The rest of the system struggled, except for Kane County, who were just all wet.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs couldn't dance to the music of the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 6-1.

Brooks Raley had a decent start, but took the loss anyway. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings. Raley walked two and struck out four.

Second baseman Logan Watkins was 2 for 5.

Brett Jackson, J.C. Boscan and Iowa manager Marty Pevey were all ejected in this game. At least the Boscan ejection sounded undeserved.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defenestrated the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-1.

Starting pitcher Alberto Cabrera won his fifth game after allowing only one run over six innings. Cabrera gave up six hits. He walked three and struck out seven.

Center fielder Matt Szczur went 2 for 4 with a triple and a walk. He scored one run.

DH Ty Wright was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Catcher Chad Noble had an identical 2 for 4 with two RBI night.

Left fielder Anthony Giansanti had two doubles in a 2 for 4 game. He scored two runs. Right fielder Rubi Silva went 2 for 4 and scored once.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs fell short against the Tampa Yankees, 5-4.

Starter Ben Wells put the Cubs behind early when he allowed a two-run home run in top of the first inning. He took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over six innings.

Shortstop Javier Baez hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was his eighth home run of the year. He was 1 for 4.

In the eighth inning, Ben Carhart hit a two-run home run to get Daytona to within a run. He was also 1 for 4.

That was two of the three hits Daytona got in this game.

Kane County Cougars

The Cougars game at the Quad Cities was cancelled because of a wet field.
