Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 6

Scott Cunningham

Matt Garza took another step towards returning to Wrigley as Iowa won their series with Oklahoma City. Daytona and Kane County both fell behind early and couldn't catch up.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs clipped the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 6-1.

Matt Garza made his second rehab start this afternoon for Iowa. He made 54 pitches, 37 of them for strikes. His final line was 3.1 innings while allowing one run on four hits. The one run scored after he had left the game. Garza struck out three and didn't walk anyone.

Garza will make one more rehab start. If everything is good after that start, he will likely be activated and will rejoin the rotation in Chicago.

After Cory Wade finished the fourth inning for Garza, Chris Rusin pitched the rest of the game as if it was a start and got the win. He threw five shutout innings, allowing only three singles. He struck out three.

Third baseman Josh Vitters hit his second home run in as many days when he hit a two-run shot to left field. Vitters was 1 for 4.

First baseman Edwin Maysonet gave the I-Cubs and early 2-0 lead in the second inning when he hit his first home run of the year with a man on. Maysonet went 2 for 4 with a double and three total RBI.

First baseman Brad Nelson was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Right fielder Brian Bogusevic tripled and walked twice in a 1 for 2 game. He scored two runs and had one batted in.

Tennessee Smokies

Driving home to good ole Rocky Top.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs fell to the St. Lucie Mets, 6-2.

Starter Zach Cates hadn't given up a run in his last two starts, but today he got hit hard for six runs on eleven hits over only four innings. Cates walked one and struck out two.

Frank Del Valle and Austin Reed both pitched two shutout innings of relief.

Right fielder Jorge Soler accounted for most of Daytona's offense this evening. He was 2 for 4 with a triple and his fourth home run of the season; a solo shot in the seventh. Soler scored both of Daytona's runs.

Left fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars six-game win streak came to an end when they were devoured by the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 11-8.

Starter Lendy Castillo got hammered for eight runs on eight hits, including a pair of home runs, in only three innings. Two of the eight runs were unearned. Castillo walked one and struck out two as his record fell to 0-2.

Maybe Al was on to something with this Castillo character.

Despite trailing 11-1 after four and a half innings, the Cougars fought their way back into this game and even got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth before a Marco Hernandez strikeout ended the game.

Bijan Rademacher went 3 for 5 with a stolen base. He scored one run and had one RBI. He also pitched a perfect 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning.

Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 3 with two walks. Chen scored two runs and had two RBI. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 1 for 3 with a double and two walks. He scored one run and had one batted in.
