Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 23

For the second day in a row, only Daytona ends up in the win column.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were shut down by the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals), 6-0.

Nick Struck started and took the loss. He gave up six runs on seven hits in just five innings. One of the six runs was unearned. Struck walked two and struck out four.

Iowa managed four hits. Shortstop Tim Torres went 1 for 3 with a double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies couldn't hide from the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 5-2.

Starter Eric Jokisch threw six innings got the loss. He gave up three runs on six hits, including a pair of solo home runs. Jokisch struck out five and walked only one.

The Smokies briefly tied the score 2-2 when they plated two runs in the top of the sixth. Matt Szczur singled and then Arismendy Alcantara doubled, putting runners on second and third. After a Rubi Silva sacrifice fly, Justin Bour doubled home Alcantara.

Szczur, Alcantara and Bour were each 1 for 4. Silva was 1 for 3 with the sac fly. That's four of Tennessee's five hits.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs caged the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 6-1.

It was a solid start for Kyler Burke, who improved his record to 4-0. Burke pitched six innings and allowed the one run on three hits. Burke walked one and struck out one.

Austin Reed really earned his three-inning save, retiring all nine batters he faced. Reed struck out two. It was Reed's first save of the season.

Shortstop Javier Baez went 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. He doubled, stole third and scored in the sixth inning, giving Daytona the lead for good.

Third baseman Ben Carhart went 3 for 4 with a double. First baseman Dustin Geiger was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs batted in. Geiger also scored once.

Center fielder Zeke DeVoss went 2 for 4 with a walk and one run scored.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars were relieved of their wallets by the Quad City River Bandits (Astros), 6-1.

Starter Felix Pena gave up four runs in the first inning and the Cougars never got back into the game. Three of those runs were unearned after an error by third baseman Jeimer Candelario started the inning. Pena's final line was 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five.

The only Cougars' run scored on a home run by catcher Carlos Escobar in the eighth inning. He was 1 for 4.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks were beaten by the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 8-6.

Duane Underwood started and pitched the first 4.2 innings. He got hammered for seven runs on eight hits, including a pair of solo home runs. One of the seven runs was unearned. Underwood walked two and struck out four.

Center fielder Jacob Hannemann hit his first professional home run to lead off the third inning. He was 1 for 5.

Right fielder Kevin Encarnacion hit a pair of doubles in a 3 for 5 game. He scored once.

First baseman Jacob Rogers was 3 for 5 with a run batted in. Second baseman David Bote went 2 for 4 with one run scored and another one batted in.

Left fielder Shawon Dunston doubled home Bote in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to start the season to eight games.
