Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 28

Dave Sappelt - USA TODAY Sports

Iowa reaches .500 and stays in first place. Daytona keeps up the offensive assault for their seventh win of the second half. Boise comes from behind to stun Eugene. The Smokies have a new owner.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs got back to .500 with a 5-1 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals).

Chris Rusin wasn't as good this start as he was in the last one, but he was still pretty good as he evened his record at 7-7. Rusin allowed one run on five hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out two.

The I-Cubs pounded out 16 hits tonight, 14 of which were singles. They were led by second baseman Logan Watkins, who was 4 for 5 with one RBI and one run scored.

Right fielder Dave Sappelt went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Catcher Luis Flores was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.

DH Darnell McDonald was 2 for 5 and he scored one run. Left fielder Ty Wright, in his first game back with Iowa, was 2 for 5 with two runs batted in. He scored once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies got an inning and a half of a double-header in before the rains came. The two games will be made up in July.

In the meanwhile, the Smokies have a new owner. No, this won't affect the players much if at all. The new owner says he wants to continue to be a Cubs affiliate and to "build more connections with Chicago."

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs won their seventh out of nine games in the second half with a 13-5 thrashing of the Tampa Yankees.

Starter Yao-Lin Wang had some uncharacteristic wildness tonight. He only lasted 2.2 innings and he allowed four runs on three hits and four walks, three of which came in a four-run third inning. He did not have a strikeout.

Austin Reed got the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Reed only allowed one hit. He struck out five and didn't walk anyone.

Eduardo Figueroa got the three inning save. He allowed two runs on five hits. Figueroa walked one and struck out two.

Third baseman Wes Darvill extended to D-Cubs lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run in the top of the third. It was Darvill's first home run this year. Darvill was 2 for 5 with a walk. He scored three times.

Shortstop Javier Baez broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth inning with his league-leading 17th home run of the season. It came with the base empty. Baez was 3 for 6 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Left fielder Zeke DeVoss hit the third and final Daytona home run with the bases empty in the seventh inning. It was DeVoss's fourth home run. DeVoss went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored three runs and knocked two home.

In his first game in High-A, right fielder Bijan Rademacher was 2 for 5 with two RBI singles. He scored once. Catcher Taylor Davis went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He had one RBI. Center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 5.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars were shut out by Beloit Snappers (Athletics), 2-0.

Michael Heesch was the hard-luck loser. He pitched the first seven innings and gave up only one run on five hits. Heesch walked one and struck out three.

Kane County only managed four singles tonight. First baseman Daniel Vogelbach was 2 for 4.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks came from behind to take the luster off the Eugene Emeralds (Padres), 5-4 in ten innings.

Starter Duane Underwood pitched 4.1 innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits. Underwood struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Orbandy Rodriguez kept Boise in the game with two scoreless, hitless innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Matt Iannazzo got the win in relief. He pitched the top of the tenth, where the only baserunner reached on an error. Iannazzo struck out one.

Rony Rodriguez tied the game with a two-out pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. It was his first home run in affiliated baseball.

Center fielder Jacob Hannemann singled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. In the eighth inning, he tripled and scored. He was 2 for 5.

First baseman Jacob Rogers singled home Hannemann to end the game in the tenth. Rogers was 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored one run.
