Kane County Cougars Wrap: June 5

Dan Vogelbach - Sue Skowronski

With Iowa having a scheduled off day and the Smokies and Daytona rained out, Kane County has the day all to themselves. Fortunately, they won.

The Midwest League announced their all-star teams and Dan Vogelbach was named the starting DH for the West. Rock Shoulders and Bijan Rademacher are reserves. Pitchers Tayler Scott, Felix Pena and Nathan Dorris were also named to the team.

The Florida State League named their all-stars yesterday and Javier Baez, Dustin Geiger, John Andreoli and Jorge Soler were all named to the North team.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars squashed the Burlington Bees (Athletics), 8-6.

Pierce Johnson started for the Cougars and collected his fourth win of the season. Johnson allowed four runs on five hits over five innings. Two of the four runs were unearned, and the two that were earned were both solo home runs by the Bees' Sherman Johnson. They were Sherman Johnson's first two home runs this season. Johnson walked two and struck out five.

Felix Pena pitched two innings and despite allowing a two-out single and a walk in the ninth inning, got his first save without allowing a run. Those were the only two baserunners Pena allowed while he struck out three.

First baseman Dan Vogelbach gave the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish when he hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was Vogelbach's ninth home run. He was 2 for 3 with two walks, although one was intentional. Vogelbach scored three times.

Right fielder Reggie Golden was 3 for 4 with a two-run single in the third inning.

Left fielder Oliver Zapata had two doubles in a 2 for 5 game. He also stole a base. Zapata scored one run and had one RBI. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 5 with one run batted in and one scored. DH Rock Shoulders went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.
