Cubs Claim Cole Gillespie On Waivers From Giants

USA TODAY Sports

The roster Jenga continues.

The Cubs have a new outfielder -- but not quite yet:

It's unclear at this writing whether Gillespie will report for tomorrow's game, or whether it'll just happen after the All-Star break.

That ought to be fun, having Chicago sportswriters confuse him with the White Sox' Conor Gillaspie -- who also used to play for the Giants. Gillespie -- the new Cub -- was a college teammate of Darwin Barney at Oregon State. He was a third-round draft pick of the Brewers in 2006.

Gillespie looks like a Ryan Sweeney clone (from the other side of the plate); he's drawn a lot of walks in his minor-league career (career minor-league OBP of .391), but never did much at the major-league level. It appears from his very meager major-league record (130 PA in parts of three seasons with the Brewers, Diamondbacks and Giants that he never got much of a chance to show what he could do. Since Gillespie hits right-handed, if the Cubs decide to go back to a seven-man bullpen (recommended by me!), they'll have another RH option off the bench to go with Dave Sappelt.
