Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 17

Yao-Lin Wang - Chung Sung-Jun

Boise won their fifth straight game and third straight over Hillsboro, sweeping the three game series. Daytona falls in extras and the Cougars woes continue.

Iowa Cubs

The International League defeated the Pacific Coast League, 4-3.

Chris Rusin was the only Iowa Cub in the game. He faced two batters in the ninth inning and got a groundout to short and a strikeout.

Tennessee Smokies

The South Division All-Stars defeated the North Division All-Stars, 6-0. (The Smokies are in the North)

Kyle Hendricks started for the North and took the loss. He allowed two runs on three hits in the one inning he pitched. He didn't have a walk or a strikeout.

The North managed one hit in the entire game, a fifth-inning double by Mariners prospect James Jones. Can you imagine getting no-hit in an all-star game?

Anyway, Matt Szczur and Arismendy Alcantara were both 0 for 2. Christian Villanueva was 0 for 3. Rafael Lopez was 0 for 1 and made the game's lone error.

And none of this goes on their permanent record.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were cracked by the Charlotte Stone Crabs (Rays) 4-3 in 11 innings. The loss ended Daytona's four-game winning streak.

Yao-Lin Wang threw the first 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits, including a solo home run. Wang walked two and struck out two.

Dayan Diaz took the loss when he allowed a walk-off home run to start the eleventh inning. His final line was 1+ innings and allowing the one run on three hits. Diaz struck out two and didn't walk anyone.

Catcher Chadd Krist was 2 for 3 with two walks. He scored one run and had an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give Daytona a temporary 3-2 lead.

First baseman Dustin Geiger was 3 for 5 with a double. Left fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars couldn't swim with the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 8-2.

Starter Juan Paniagua made his Midwest League debut and took the loss. He pitched the first 2.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and four walks. He also hit a batter. Paniagua struck out two.

Both Cougars runs scored on back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning by catcher Willson Contreras and right fielder Kevin Encarnacion. It was Contreras's seventh home run this season and Encarnacion's fifth and first with the Cougars.

Contreras was 1 for 3 with a walk and Encarnacion was 1 for 2 with two walks.

Center fielder Albert Almora was 2 for 5.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks tripped up the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks), 5-1.

Tyler Skulina made his first professional start, although it only lasted two innings and he builds up arm strength. He allowed no runs and one hit. Skulina struck out one and didn't walk anyone.

Loiger Padron was awarded the win because Skulina didn't go five innings, but he certainly earned it with three scoreless innings of relief. Padron gave up one hit and walked one. Padron struck out two.

Eddie Orozco pitched a perfect inning in his first game after being demoted from Kane County. He struck out all three batters he faced.

Boise scored their five runs on only five hits, thanks to seven walks. Shortstop Carlos Penalver went 2 for 4 with two RBI singles. Penalver scored one run. He also stole a base.

Left fielder Shawon Dunston was 1 for 4 with a walk, an RBI single in the ninth inning and a stolen base.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Diamondbacks, 5-3.
