Cubs Swap Marmol To Dodgers For Guerrier

Justin K. Aller

The Cubs also sent prospect Ronald Torreyes to the Astros for some international pool spending money.

This was rumored Monday, but now it's official:

But wait! There's more!

And if you think the Cubs are losing money in all these deals... there's one more trade that got them some international pool dollars:

Thanks to Brett for putting the actual dollar amount in the Torreyes deal in a tweet; I couldn't find that amount anywhere else.

The Marmol deal, we talked about yesterday, and it did seem pretty clear that Matt Guerrier would come back in an exchange of bad contracts -- though I do not yet know how those contracts will be paid by the Dodgers and Cubs. The Cubs will have to put someone else off both the 40-man and 25-man rosters to make room for Guerrier, as well as for Pedro Strop; both are supposed to join the team "later this week", according to team press releases. Marmol had been removed earlier; the only 25-man spot vacated by these deals is by Scott Feldman, who is being replaced by Tuesday's starter Chris Rusin. Unless Rusin is sent down right after the start. Who knows?

Regarding Torreyes, he had some talent and could eventually make the big leagues, but the Cubs evidently wanted the pool money more. Perhaps an Eloy Jimenez signing will complete this big day for the Cubs.

Whew! That's a lot of transactions for one day. Have at these, too. One final comment from me: looking at that photo of Guerrier at the top of this post, he has a bit of the Dirty Dick Tidrow look about him. If he could be that good for the Cubs, this will be a big win.
