Baseball-reference.com is a wonderful resource for any baseball fan, but particularly for any baseball writer. I probably do a couple of dozen searches per day there, and yes, I have sponsored some pages so that I support the site.
Idly flipping through today, I thought I'd check out the Cubs' most recent trade with all the other teams. I've arranged these in chronological order from the most recent deal made. The only rule to make this list: the deal had to involve players on both sides (bb-ref also lists outright purchases or waiver deals where only one player switched teams). Also excluded are deals where the only return was "future considerations" or a player to be named later (if there was a PTBNL in a deal involving other players, it's included).
In some cases the Cubs and other teams have traded quite recently, and frequently (the Rangers come to mind as a recent, frequent trade partner; three deals with them since July 2012). In other cases, it's been a long time. You'll remember some of these deals fondly. Others, not so much. It's been more than a decade since the Cubs have traded with the Astros, Cardinals, Blue Jays or Angels.
August 5, 2012: The Chicago Cubs traded Jeff Baker to the Detroit Tigers for players to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent Marcelo Carreno (minors) (October 16, 2012) and cash (October 16, 2012) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.
April 21, 2012: The Chicago Cubs traded Marlon Byrd and cash to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later and Michael Bowden. The Boston Red Sox sent Hunter Cervenka (minors) (May 15, 2012) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.
January 8, 2011: The Tampa Bay Rays traded Zach Rosscup (minors), Matt Garza and Fernando Perez to the Chicago Cubs for Hak-Ju Lee (minors), Chris Archer, Robinson Chirinos, Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer.
August 7, 2008: The Chicago Cubs traded Scott Eyre to the Philadelphia Phillies for Brian Schlitter. (This is the only deal between the two teams since 1997, when the Cubs acquired Mickey Morandini for Doug Glanville.)
August 31, 2006: The Chicago Cubs traded Phil Nevin and cash to the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named later. The Minnesota Twins sent Adam Harben (minors) (September 5, 2006) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.
August 25, 2002: The Chicago Cubs traded Jeff Fassero to the St. Louis Cardinals for players to be named later. The St. Louis Cardinals sent Jared Blasdell (minors) (September 24, 2002) and Jason Karnuth (September 24, 2002) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade. (The Cubs have made just two deals with the Cardinals since the Bruce Sutter trade in 1980 -- this one, and the 1995 trade in which the Cubs acquired Todd Zeile for two minor leaguers and Mike Morgan.)
August 22, 2002: The Chicago Cubs traded Tom Gordon to the Houston Astros for players to be named later and Ross Rohlicek (minors). The Houston Astros sent Travis Anderson (minors) (September 11, 2002) and Mike Nannini (minors) (September 11, 2002) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.
December 10, 2001: The Toronto Blue Jays traded Alex Gonzalez to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later and Felix Heredia. The Chicago Cubs sent James Deschaine (minors) (December 13, 2001) to the Toronto Blue Jays to complete the trade.
March 25, 2001: The Anaheim Angels traded Mike Fyhrie and cash to the Chicago Cubs for Jose Nieves.
