Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 31

Yoanner Negrin - Al Bello

Boise lost a big game in a big way, getting no-hit by Hillsboro. However, their playoff chances are still in their own hands. Daytona's ten-game win streak ended but the Smokies just keep on rolling.

A quick congratulations to long-time former Cubs farmhand Jim Adduci, who reportedly will be called up by the Rangers tomorrow after ten seasons in the minors, seven with the Cubs.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs couldn't be heard over the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 7-2.

Starter Yoanner Negrin only went 1.2 innings and he took the loss after he gave up two runs on a home run in the second inning. Negrin allowed four hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Center fielder Jae-Hoon Ha went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and two stolen bases. Ha scored one run. Right fielder Dave Sappelt went 2 for 4 with a walk and he scored the other Iowa run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies blinded the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 4-3.

Nick Struck started and got his first Tennessee win and seventh overall this season. Struck pitched five innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Struck walked three and had one strikeout.

A.J. Morris pitched two scoreless innings and Hunter Cervenka pitched one scoreless before giving way to Frank Batista, who got his 19th save with a perfect ninth inning. Batista did not have a strikeout.

The Smokies took the lead for good in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by shortstop Javier Baez, his 36th of the season and 19th with Tennessee. Baez was 2 for 5 and scored two runs.

Two batters later, third baseman Christian Villanueva made it 3-0 with his 18th home run this season. Villanueva was 1 for 3 with two walks.

Left fielder John Andreoli was 1 for 4 with a walk and two steals. That gives Andreoli 39 steals this year between Daytona and Tennessee. He had one run batted in. Second baseman Arismendy Alcantara was 2 for 5 and scored one run. He stole his 31st base of the season.

Center fielder Matt Szczur was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs had their ten-game winning streak snapped with a 5-1 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (Brewers).

Yao-Lin Wang pitched the first three innings without allowing a run. He gave up two hits and did not walk anyone. Wang struck out four.

Ryan Searle got the loss after he gave up four runs in the fifth inning. Searle pitched four innings overall and gave up four runs on five hits. Searle walked two and fanned three.

Second baseman Wes Darvill went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. Shortstop Elliot Soto was 2 for 2 with a double.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars were extinguished by the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 9-0.

Oh why even bother?

OK. If you insist. Starter James Pugliese took the loss after he allowed five runs on six hits, including a three-run home run, over only three innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Ryan Sweeney was 1 for 4 and Luis Valbuena went 1 for 3 with a walk in rehab assignments.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks were no-hit by the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks), 5-0.

The Hops Kyle Schepel threw the first no-hitter against the Hawks since 2001. The only baserunner was a Yasiel Balaguert walk in the fifth inning.

Starter Dillon Maples took the loss after he gave up four runs on six hits over five innings. Two of the four runs were unearned. Maples struck out six and walked two.

Salem-Keizer beat Eugene, so Boise fell two games out of first and one game behind Hillsboro with two to play against Hillsboro. Remember that the Hawks make the postseason if either they or Salem-Keizer wins the second half. So Salem-Keizer winning was actually a good thing.
