Cubs vs. Brewers Preview, Monday 9/16, 7:10 CT: Pitcher Wins And Losses

Joe Sargent

Individual pitcher wins and losses are pretty meaningless in modern baseball. Nevertheless, we could see something tonight that's rare in recent Cubs history.

If Edwin Jackson is tagged with the defeat tonight, that will be his 16th loss of the season (and most if not all of them, well-deserved).

You might not think that's a big deal, but the last time a Cubs starter lost 16 or more games was 1999, when Steve Trachsel lost 18. In fact, since 1977 -- 36 years ago -- there has been only one other Cubs hurler to lose 16, Frank Castillo in 1996.

It would also be a career high for Jackson, who went 5-15 for the 2007 Rays. (Yes, I know. They were still called the Devil Rays in 2007.)

Thus, the state of the 2013 Cubs. Oh, and besides all that and a series win at Miller Park in June, the Cubs are 5-19 in Milwaukee since the start of 2011. Try to enjoy the game anyway.

Cubs lineup:

Castro SS, Valbuena 3B, Rizzo 1B, Schierholtz RF, Sweeney CF, Lake LF, Castillo C, Barney 2B, Jackson P

Brewers lineup:

Aoki RF, Segura SS, Lucroy 1B, Ramirez 3B, Gomez CF, Gennett 2B, Gindl LF, Maldonado C, Peralta P

I give up trying to figure out Edwin Jackson for these little blurbs. I tell you that maybe he'll be good this outing, and he sucks. I tell you that maybe he'll suck, and he... sucks. Well, not every time, but you get the idea. Maddening. Just like his four starts so far against the Brewers: two of them pretty good, two of them sucky. Overall against Milwaukee: 4.74 ERA (almost exactly his season average), 24⅔ innings, 1.378 WHIP (slightly below his season average). In short, I could pretty much say he's going to suck, and he'd either suck or not. Maybe next year will be better.

Wily Peralta's three starts against the Cubs have resulted in a 3.86 ERA (a bit below his overall ERA) and 1.371 WHIP (ditto). His season ERA has not been below 4.30 nor above 4.60 since the All-Star break. Prediction: six innings, three earned runs, and the Cubs figure out a new and interesting way to lose.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Brewers site Brew Crew Ball. The usual caution is advised.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.
