We've done this before, but some people are so down about the current season, I wanna cheer folks up. So let's talk about favorite Cubs moments.
I'm not lucky enough to have been born a Cubs fan, but I did move to Chicago in the mid 90s, and I did get to see Ryno play in his last season at Wrigley field. But 2003 was my first real experience with CUBS FEVER and I was really paying attention starting in 2007, when Lou Pinella (my favorite Yankee) became manager. 2007 was a fun year, but 2008 was going to Be It, I was convinced.
My favorite moment from 2008 actually comes on day 1 of the season. It was the bottom of the ninth, and the Cubs were losing 3-0 to the Brewers at home on opening day. Lee had singled, and Gagne (remember him?) walked Aramis Ramirez to get to the "new guy".
And the crowd started chanting..
fu-ku-do-me… fu-ku-do-me… and there’d be a pitch and it would all quiet down. Then it would start up again… fu-ku-do-me… fu-ku-do-me…
And then, on a three and one pitch, he hit the ball with that now infamous helicopter swing, and there was a huge pause as everyone took a breath, and then I swear, I could hear them cheering all the way from my house in Melrose Park as this enormous roar, like a landing 787, just exploded out of Wrigley Field and the ball went over the fence.
That memory is what kept me from throwing my TV through the window six months later, and it’s part of what keeps me a fan now. Just amazing.
If he’d hit a walkoff, they would have been screaming about retiring his number right then and there.
So. Anyone else got a favorite moment to share?
