Can anyone explain the situation here? I've seen it implied that as part of the ownership transfer the Ricketts had to agree to keep Zell on as a partial owner and artificially curtail spending. I understand why Zell would want to remain an owner, and have read articles about him changing his company's status without officially selling the team. But I don't understand why this deal keeps the Cubs from spending money.
If Zell needed a write off, wouldn't he want the Cubs to spend alot of $$$ so that they don't profit and thus show a loss?
Why does this arrangement go away in 2019? (again, something I have seen implied)
If Zell only owns 5%, why can he control the Cubs' budgets and spending?
