Community Mock Draft for 2014 at SB Nation Minor League Ball site

Hi Cub fans, as some of you may know the SB Nation site, Minor League Ball, conducts a Community Mock Draft every year where members of the site act as scouting director for their favorite team and conduct a amateur draft through round 3 with the players that are available in the real draft that year.

This year I am acting as the Cubs Scouting Director for this excercise. There are posts over at the site such at this onewhere strategy and discussion of the team draft picks take place.

Last year I was the Pirates SD, the year before that I acted as the Cardinals SD, and the 3 prior years to that acted as the Brewer SD for this excercise. As a point of reference for me when it comes to scouting and drafting players, this is the first year in 15 in which I am not working as an associate scout for a Major League team. Ive worked for 4 different teams over that time span, covering two World Series winners, a couple of scouting commissions, and one actual major leaguer. I tended to work mostly scouting college players in IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, MI and IN, and the reason for the break right now is that I have a very young family with 3 small children and needed a bit more time at home this year.

As far as Cub fan-dom goes, I was a kid who grew up in the 80's in Milwaukee so was blessed with Harry Caray on WGN and the Ryne Sandberg, Leon Durham, Ron Cey, Keith Moreland teams. My dad started to take me and my brother to a game at Wrigley once a year when I was 12 and every year since then I take my wife and soon my daughters to a game. I just love everything about Wrigley: from the Hot Dogs, to getting there on the El, to the Ivy. And I am looking forward to the next few years when this team becomes a feared entity not only in the NL Central but in all of baseball.

I welcome you all over to talk 2014 draft and how the Cubs might approach things.
