Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 49

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The Cubs' offense finally comes through for Shark and gives him his first win of the season.

I bet he's relieved to finally have that giant albatross off of his back.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Welington Castillo. Two hits in critical situations, two (well, three) outs in much less meaningful ones.
  • Hero - Jeff Samardzija. Not with his arm, but with his bat on the tie-breaking double.
  • Sidekick - Emilio Bonifacio. Would have taken the top spot on the podium today if not for getting caught stealing in the first.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Big Goat - Jeff Samardzija. Almost not fair, given that it was his first win of the year. Didn't allow a lot of baserunners, but two-thirds of them scored.
  • Goat - Junior Lake. Primarily the result of his inning-ending whiff in the fifth stranding Bonifacio at third.
  • KidStarlin Castro. The only Cub to not record a hit.

Castro now has the interesting honor of leading both the Hero and Goat divisions after Monday's win.
