Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 69

How many of these guys are here only for moral support? And what exactly is Starlin Castro looking at? - Rob Foldy

It's often said that football is a game of inches. All it took was a few of them last night for the Marlins.

On the other hand, had the ball hit by Garrett Jones flown a few inches shorter and ended up as a double, who knows what kind of chaos could have ensued from another potential extra-inning game. Very tarnished silver lining?...

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Luis Valbuena (.152). Another good night for Val-B with two doubles, one of which gave the Cubs the lead temporarily in the seventh.
  • Hero - Junior Lake (.109). Straight ball, he hits very much. Sometimes.
  • Sidekick - Ryan Sweeney (.099). Almost took himself right back off the podium going for third on the passed ball in the ninth.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Brian Schlitter (-.569). Only the second homer he has given up this year, but it was a backbreaker.
  • Goat - Justin Ruggiano (-.104). In cruel irony, he makes the podium as a result of his sacrifice fly in the ninth.
  • Kid - Anthony Rizzo (-.099). Another big opportunity missed with runners on first and second in the fifth.

Valbuena takes over the lead on the plus/minus chart thanks to a four-point swing in the podium races.
