Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 78

Who needs these Castro and Rizzo guys, anyway? - Jonathan Daniel

It's Bizarro World today at Heroes and Goats!

Perhaps someone switched the Hero and Goat podiums around today as part of some kind of practical joke. But hey, I'll take the win any way it comes.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - John Baker (.310). How rare is this event, you ask? Today's game was the fourth in his career in which he broke the .300 WPA mark, and the first since August 11, 2009. It's worth it to look at that page just to see some of the names there.
  • Hero - Ryan Sweeney (.132). Huge two-out single in the fourth to give the Cubs the lead that they would not relinquish.
  • Sidekick - Jason Hammel, the pitcher (.087). Another solid performance on the mound, and escaped a big jam in the second inning that could have made things completely different.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jason Hammel, the hitter (-.133). Gotta get those bunts down better, dude.
  • Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.057). A 1-for-5 day when everyone else hit at least a little bit better.
  • Kid - Starlin Castro (-.046). Well, almost everyone else. But Castro didn't leave as many runners on as Rizzo did.

Baker records his first Superhero of the year on a career day, while Castro and Rizzo still wonder if the podiums got switched around.
