Arismendy Alcantara has put up impressive numbers during his first five games in a Chicago Cubs uniform. Albeit his lack of ability to get himself into batter's counts may get him sent back to Iowa.
Not Helping Himself
Through 25 plate appearances, the Dominican Republic native has taken only one walk. It's normal for young athletes to be anxious at the dish when they first come up to the bright lights, though.
But Alcantara's not only veering from free passes. He's been digging himself into trouble so much that No. 7 has seen just one 2-0 count. Sticking to the "digging" trend, 10 of his ABs have ended with zero balls along with 13 concluding with two strikes.
Doing His Best 2011 Starlin Castro Impression
As poor as those stats look, five at bats have ended in strikeouts. Nevertheless 2011 Starlin Castro, who walked in 4.9% of his ABs and struck out in 13.4% of them, is the exception -- not the rule when it comes to batters that are able to make a living without consistently working hitter's counts.
Look for Alcantara's K rate to skyrocket or, hopefully, his walk ratio to move up, as pitchers adjust to the rookie.
