Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 82

Jim Rogash

Luis Valbuena drives in the winning run, but Starlin Castro leads the Heroes with an uncommon feat.

Castro's performance on Tuesday night makes him the 23rd player in all of baseball this year to post a WPA higher than .300 without an RBI to assist.

There are five poll choices tonight for Player of the Game. Voting should be a little more interesting this time.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Starlin Castro (.317). Even though it didn't score a run, the double in the ninth was huge in shifting the balance.
  • Hero - Hector Rondon (.205). Once again had some excitement, but got the save on a bang-bang play.
  • Sidekick -  Edwin Jackson (.199). Apparently he was due; his last appearance on this side of the ledger was on May 28. One out of six ain't bad, is it?

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Junior Lake (-.149). He's up to six whiffs in a row.
  • Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.101). Couldn't overcome the inning-ending double play lineout in the sixth.
  • Kid - Welington Castillo (-.066). 0-for-3 night with the missed opportunity to add some insurance in the ninth.

Castro leads the heroes Tuesday night with clutch table-setting, while Lake checks to make sure he isn't using Mike Olt's bat.
