During the immediate aftermath of the Cubs' deal of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Athletics, BCBer jameslcrockett was posting Twitter reactions in the comments to my article announcing the trade. I thought those reactions were worth putting in a front-page article. Here, without further comment, are all those tweets, along with some from my own timeline from Friday night and early Saturday. Some are from baseball writers, some are from fans, the whole sequence -- this is more or less in chronological order -- is worth reading.
Yes, there's a bit of profanity. Worth preserving the moment, I think.
A's-Cubs blockbuster came together this morning. Talked about Samardzija a month ago and re-engaged Monday. Hammel first came up Wednesday.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 5, 2014
@bleedcubbieblue Will never understand trading away your best players for nothing. Totally baffling.— Kevin Framp (@BigKev67) July 5, 2014
@bleedcubbieblue WTF? Please help me understand this deal.— Zach Klepper (@zachklepper) July 5, 2014
@bleedcubbieblue WHY????????— Angela Peterson (@amp1297) July 5, 2014
Classic July trade. Great move now for A's. Maybe even better for Cubs down the road.— Larry Stone (@StoneLarry) July 5, 2014
I'd like to know what Theo Epstein sees in Dan Straily that I don't. No idea who's going to give Cubs innings in 2016.— robneyer (@robneyer) July 5, 2014
Okay, I can see Straily as a throw-in, since somebody has to pitch THIS season.— robneyer (@robneyer) July 5, 2014
Hammel and Samardzija go from an old, rundown home stadium to one that's actually worse, but they might get rings out of it.— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 5, 2014
Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are up there with the biggest idiots holding an executive position on a team trying to win for 106 years #cubs— Michael Sugg (@M_Sugg73) July 5, 2014
@DanTown22 Was a trade for 2 SPs, not one. But if Russell=Samardzija in trade, very few teams have ammo for Price.— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36) July 5, 2014
Not that the As care but As now have one if the thinnest systems in baseball. But they used prospects to land significant help.— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36) July 5, 2014
Man, whole lot of Cubs fans who aren't thrilled by waiting til next year or 2017. Kind of the anti-Astros fans on my Twitter feed.— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36) July 5, 2014
Man if you don't like that trade, you don't like baseball. Boldness by both organizations. Had to be hard for A's to give up Russell.— John Manuel (@johnmanuelba) July 5, 2014
Cubs caught heat in '06 for taking Colvin in 1st round, spending $1.2M on Chris Huseby in 11th. But Samardzija made that draft class— John Manuel (@johnmanuelba) July 5, 2014
