Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 86

The lone offensive bright spot on Sunday. - Greg Fiume

Another fine start for Jake Arrieta, but missed opportunities rule the day as the Cubs finish the season series with a 3-4 record against the Washington Nationals.

Talk about an ugly stat: Between the two teams, the Cubs and Nationals were 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position. I guess the good part is that the Cubs were 1-for-9 and not 1-for-11.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jake Arrieta (.147). His sixth quality start in a row.
  • Hero - John Baker (.100). Good day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks.
  • Sidekick - Brian Schlitter (.084). Kept the game tied, and that's when everything went south.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Pedro Strop (-.248). Hanging sliders to good hitters will generally lead to bad results.
  • Goat - Luis Valbuena (-.190). Currently in a 2-for-21 slump that has seen his average fall from .271 to .256.
  • Kid - Welington Castillo (-.166). Only had one at-bat and got caught looking at a borderline pitch.

UPDATED RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 86 (Changes in Bold, Notations Below):

x - Player not on 25-man roster.
y - Player not on 40-man roster.
z - Player no longer with Cubs.
