With three-fourths of the season behind us, here are some interesting stats about your 2014 Chicago Cubs!
The "Hey, let’s not pick on Edwin so much" stat:
-
Edwin Jackson, the worst Starting pitcher statistically, has the same amount of victories (6) as…. Jeff Samardzija and twice as many victories as Jake Peavy (3) and Francisco Liriano (3)
The "Wow, our outfield is remarkably unspectacular" stats:
-
Number of outfielders with 10 HRs, - None
-
Number of outfielders on pace to drive in 40 RBIs by end of year - None
-
Number of Cubs outfielders on pace to have enough ABs to qualify for batting title by the end of the year – None (Heck - There is a chance that no Cubs OF will have played 100 games for the team this year)
The "proof that 2014 was a transition year"
-
Only 3 players (Castro, Rizzo and very likely Valbuena) will reach 502 PA’s during 2014
The "Gone, but not forgotten leaders" stats
-
Most SB as a Cub this year – Emilio Bonifacio
-
Most Wins as a Cub – Jason Hammel (now tied with Travis Wood) with 8
-
Most HRs by an NL Rookie (12) – Mike Olt (tied with D’Arnaud)
The "What do 220 lbs plus players Josh Donaldson and Pedro Alvarez have in common" stat
-
More stolen bases (8) than any Cub on the active roster (7)
And last but not least, The "Holy Sombreros Batman" stat
-
In 21 games, Javy has struck out 3 or more times in 7 games. (33%) vs Tony Gwynn, who in 2440 career games struck out 3 times in a game – ONCE (.04%). If you prorated his stats over an entire season, Javy would be on pace to hit 54 homers, but strike out 308 times! (that is not a misprint)
I am sure there are other "interesting" stats out there!
