Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were tripped up by the Oklahoma CIty Dodgers, 5-4.
Dallas Beeler made a rehab start for Iowa tonight. On a strict pitch limit, Beeler only went 3.1 innings and took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and four walks. Only one of the three runs was earned because of a first inning error by Javier Baez, who played shortstop tonight. Beeler struck out four.
James Russell tossed another perfect inning in relief tonight. He's been unscored upon in six relief appearances for Iowa.
Center fielder Matt Szczur got the I-Cubs to within a run with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Sczcur was 1 for 4.
Right fielder Rubi Silva was 3 for 4 with a double and a triple. He scored once.
Baez was 0 for 4, but he only struck out once, so that's a positive sign.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were subjugated by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 3-2 in ten innings.
Starter Frank Batista pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Stephen Perakslis tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit. Perakslis struck out one and walked no one.
Zach Cates relieved Perakslis to start the tenth inning and took the loss after he allowed three straight singles after two were out. Cates did not have a strikeout.
The Smokies only had four hits tonight and DH Willson Contreras was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Ryan Dent, who was 1 for 4.
Catcher Kyle Schwarber was 0 for 2 with two walks and he scored the other Tennessee run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans swallowed the Lynchburg Hillcats (Indians), 7-3 in a game that ended after 7 1/2 innings because of rain.
Duane Underwood Jr. started and got his third win, although he wasn't as sharp as he had been this season. Underwood pitched five innings and allowed three runs on three hits, although only one of the three runs was earned. Underwood walked four and struck out six.
Michael Heesch pitched two perfect innings for his first save. He struck out two.
First baseman Jacob Rogers hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. It was Rogers' team-leading third home run this year. Rogers also had an RBI single in the first inning in a 2 for 4 night.
Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 4 with two doubles. Candelario scored two runs and had three RBI.
Right fielder Kevin Brown was 2 for 4 and scored once.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs broke a 3-3 tie with a seven-run outburst in the seventh inning and boiled the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 11-5.
South Bend starter Zach Hedges pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone.
David Garner allowed one hit but no runs over two innings of relief and picked up his first win of the year. Garner struck out three and walked no one.
Left fielder Yasiel Balaguert tripled with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. Balaguert was 2 for 3 with a walk and four total RBI. He also scored once.
Second baseman Chesny Young was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Center fielder Rashad Crawford went 2 for 5. He had an RBI single and later scored in that seventh inning.
Shortstop Gleyber Torres stayed red hot by going 2 for 5 with an RBI triple in the seventh inning. He scored an insurance run in the eighth inning.
