Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs muted the Nashville Sounds (Athletics), 4-0.
Carlos Pimentel started and got the win. Pimentel gave up three hits and issued three walks in six innings. Pimentel struck out seven.
Chris Valaika was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored once and had one run batted in. DH Adron Chambers was 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI triple in the sixth inning. He had two total RBI and scored after the triple.
Right fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 4 with a walk.
Manager Marty Pevey was ejected in third inning after a Javier Baez blast over the left field foul pole was initially ruled a home run before the umpired reversed the call and called it foul. Baez managed to stay in the game and flew out, but he was ejected after that at-bat.
The Nashville Sounds lost their sixth straight and fell to 9-16, which is tied for the worst record in the Pacific Coast League. That's ironic because the stated reason that Nashville ended their ten-year affiliation with the Brewers because they wanted a team that won more. (To be fair to the Sounds, Colorado Springs, the new Brewers affiliate, is one of the teams that is tied with Nashville for the worst record in the league.)
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were speared by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Reds), 4-3.
Starter Jeffry Antigua had a no-hitter through five innings, but he fell apart in the sixth inning and allowed four hits and four runs and took the loss. Antigua's final line was four runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. Antigua struck out two and didn't walk anyone, although he did hit the first batter he faced in the bottom of the first. That runner was caught stealing, so Antigua faced the minimum through the first five innings. Antigua also hit a two-run single in the second inning.
Shortstop Elliot Soto was 2 for 5 and scored a run. Third baseman Anthony GIansanti was 2 for 4 and scored a run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dyed the Salem Red Sox, 5-2.
Starter Jonathan Martinez allowed solo home runs in the second and sixth inning and those were the only two runs the Red Sox would score tonight. Martinez pitched six innings and gave up five hits. He struck out two and walked no one as he claimed his first win of the season.
James Pugliese pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save. He struck out one.
The Pelicans would score all five runs in the fourth inning when the first seven batters reached base. The big blows were back-to-back doubles by Billy McKinney and Jacob Rogers. McKinney was 1 for 4 with one run scored and two RBI while Rogers was 1 for 3 with a walk, one RBI and one run scored.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs shut out the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 3-0.
I don't know what the bigger story is. That starter Jeremy Null became the first South Bend Cubs pitcher to go longer than six innings this season or that he finally allowed a walk tonight. Null pitched eight innings and surrendered four hits and the one walk. The Cubs minor league pitcher of the month struck out three.
James Farris pitched the ninth and got his second save. He allowed a one out single, but no other baserunners. Farris struck out one.
Left fielder Charcer Burks was 2 for 4 with a double.
Null and his opposing number, Trevor Oaks, work fast. The time of this game was one hour, 44 minutes.
